The Complete Tribune Primer, 1901, written by Eugene Field with 75 original F. (Frederick) Opper drawing illustrating the text. Published by the Mutual Book Company, Boston, Mass., 5 x 7-1/4 inches, 152-page hardcover, cover in either dark green or red variants, black-and white content, top page edge gilded, side and bottom deckle edged. Frederick Opper is regarded by many to be among the most inventive of strip artists, hatched Happy Hooligan in 1900. Hooligan was a sort of one-man Laurel and Hardy who could never avoid trouble, no matter how good his intentions. The same year, Opper added Alphonse and Gaston, peopled by two overly courteous Frenchmen who quickly gave their names to an American colloquialism.
