George Washington's Railroad, His Dream Realized. It tells the story of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Lines, which had its beginning on 1785 when George Washington founded a company to realize his dream of a railway line that would link the waters of the Chesapeake bay to the Ohio River. Washington's believed that the American outposts needed to be linked to the original 13 states by means of transportation. In 1785 the James River Company with Washington as president starts construction of the James River Canal. With the advent of the railway in the 1830's, the waterway became secondary and trains took over as the primary source of moving goods and mass travel. After the Civil War, a few larger railways bought out the tracks of smaller lines and these in turn grew to become the Chesapeake & Ohio, which in 1890 acquired the Richmond and Alleghany Railroad. Other features include a profile of legendary railroad worker John Henry, speed trains, observation dome cars and the 740th Railway Operating Battalion. 16 pages, full color, 6.75-in. x 10-in., all newsprint, no cover price.
