12 page Challengers of the Unknown story "Invitation to a Hanging"

Characters Challengers of the Unknown (Ace Morgan; Rocky Davis; Prof Haley; Red Ryan); Judge Bentley; John Evans; Doc Hemlock; Wolf Dengon; Shark Powell; Snake Saunders.
Synopsis The Challengers attend the hanging of Wolf Dengon, Shark Powell, and Snake Saunders. All grin and promise that Doc Hemlock will raise them from the dead to get revenge. The Challs doubt that: they saw Hemlock take poison to avoid capture. But that night, a glowing Wolf Dengon appears in the judge’s car, grabs the wheel, and crashes it. Shark Powell drowns the DA while swimming. The Challs visit the thugs’ graves and are jumped by their glowing ghosts. Their bodies are like iron and the Challs are pounded. They awaken in Doc Hemlock’s lair. He faked his death. The Challs battle the “ghosts” and find their robots. A fire flares up. Doc Hemlock backs from the Challs, stumbles, and gets hung in a noose. The Challs dash free.

Notes The first half of origin, introduction, and first appearance of the Challengers. The reprint continues in the next issue. DC Archives credits Dave Wood as writer, but Jack Kirby historians, including Joe Simon contend Kirby brought the book complete to DC. Did Wood rewrite Kirby's script?
