Item #61900324
Jerry Siegel 'Because of You' Feud Letter (December 12, 1951)Published 1951$2,000.00- "With Apologies to No One", Siegel jumps into his poem lamenting his financial situation. Also included is the original mailing envelope the letter was sent in. Letter is in fair condition with some rust migration from a paperclip. 8 1/2" x 11".
-
Item #61900322
Jerry Siegel 'Poems' Feud Letter (November 21, 1951)Published 1951$2,000.00- While many of the letters Siegel sent during his long-running feud with National Comics over the rights to Superman are full of borderline unhinged vitriol, this entry is a bit more whimsical with Siegel composing several poems to taunt publisher Jack Liebowitz. Letter is in fair condition with some rust migration where it had been paperclipped. 8 1/2" x 11".
-
Item #61900328
Jerry Siegel Blackmail Feud Letter (December 18, 1951)Published 1951$2,500.00- Probably the most cryptic of all the letters sent by Siegel in this war of words, this letter is just a list of references to people and events that Siegel is threatening to use as blackmail against Donenfeld and others. Most notable are "Siegel", "HOT STORIES", "John Sumner", "Suppression of Vice", and 'Jail"- all references to Donenfeld's past work with pulps and a an incident where a man named Herbert M. Siegel took the fall for an obscenity charge being levelled against Donenfeld in 1934. Signed by Siegel. Also included is the original mailing envelope the letter was sent in. Letter is in good condition with minor rust migration from a paperclip. 8 1/2" x 11".
-
Item #61900330
Jerry Siegel Feud Letter (March 28, 1953)Published 1953$2,500.00- Siegel's correspondence in this feud always vacillated between rage and self-pity (often between sentences), but this one is almost entirely the latter with Siegel recounting the emotional turmoil he experiences. Of note is Siegel's reference to the "Jack Jawbreaker" storyline from Al Capp's Li'l Abner which ran in 1947 and was written about Siegel and Shuster's treatment by National. The Jack Jawbreaker strips can be viewed in this article from Animation Resources (a fantastic resource!) Letter is in good condition with no significant staining or discoloration. Also included is the original mailing envelope the letter was sent in. 8 1/2" x 11".

Item #61142760
Jerry Siegel Feud Letter (May 25, 1953)Published 1953$3,000.00- Two years into his mostly correspondence-based feud with the executives of National Comics, Siegel's campaign had progressed to sending letters directly to the executives' homes. This hand-scrawled letter addressed to publisher Jack Liebowitz opens with an ostensible congratulations on the engagement of Liebowitz's daughter as a jumping off point to once again share his anger over the "rotten injustice" committed by National. His anger is quite apparent here, especially in his signature where he signs off as "Jerry Siegel Creator of SUPERMAN"
For a bit of context, Siegel and Shuster's lawsuit over the ownership of Superman/Superboy and unpaid royalties from radio and merchandising was settled out of court almost exactly 6 years prior to the date of this letter with Siegel and Shuster receiving a payment of $94,013.16 between them, though in Siegel's divorce proceedings a year later it's noted that after legal fees he was left with $29,000 some of which presumably was given to his ex-wife.
Also included is the original envelope the letter was mailed in. Letter is in fair condition with some staining that appears to be rust migration from where the envelope was attached with a paperclip during storage by National. 8 1/2" x 11".

Item #61900331
Jerry Siegel Feud Letter to Head Mail Clerk at National Publications (December 10, 1951)Published 1951$1,500.00- While this letter contains the same text as those sent to several National Comics executives, it is notable that a month after sending those out Siegel had gotten to a point where he was reaching out to the mail clerk. Letter displays significant damage including some paper loss due to oxidation at the fold points. Also included is the original mailing envelope the letter was sent in. 8 1/2" x 11".

Item #61900325
Jerry Siegel Feud Letter to Max Liebowitz (November 22, 1951)Published 1951$2,500.00- A twofer from Siegel here in this message addressed to Max Liebowitz- in the first page Siegel reintroduces himself in a biting manner and reminds the upper management of National that he is currently 'destitute' before closing the missive with the home addresses of the top men. The second page is set of three of Siegel's poems. First page is signed by Siegel. Also included is the original mailing envelope the letter was sent in. Both pages display moderate staining and are ripped in the top left corner where they were torn from the staple attaching them to the envelope. 8 1/2" x 11"
-
Item #61900329
Jerry Siegel Feud Letter to Michael Estrow (November 22, 1951)Published 1951$2,000.00- While most of the letters mailed by Siegel on this date contain the same message and group of poems, this one sent to Michael Estrow of Leader News Co. varies a bit in the letter's text. While containing some of the same verbiage as the letters sent directly to National, this one also contains a paragraph where Siegel equates National's treatment of him to the larger, cultural threats facing comics at the time. Signed by Siegel. Also included is the original mailing envelop the letter was sent in. Letter is in good condition with some staining, poem page displays a higher level of staining. 8 1/2" x 11".

Item #61900323
Jerry Siegel Feud National Comics Internal Assessment (Undated)Published 1951$5,000.00- Of the many pieces of correspondence chronicling Siegel's feud with National Comics, this appraisal of Siegel's mental state and situation from an unnamed person associated with National (possibly lawyer Dave Alterbaum) may be the most comprehensive- and bleak. Tasked by Liebowtiz with meeting with Siegel, this lengthy document contains a relatively objective appraisal of the aggrieved writer and his situation from the writer. Indebted to both his ex-wife and the milkman and unsure that he would even be able to make rent that month, the writer finds that even the possibility of criminal prosecution isn't enough to dissuade Siegel from continuing with his threats towards Liebowtiz- "I have one foot in jail for not paying for my child's support and I may as well go there for any other reason."
The writer goes on to describe Siegel's point of view on the situation, framing most of his grievances as an attempt to shift blame away from the consequences of his own financial decisions. He then describes how he explained to Siegel the realities of the situation which Siegel seemingly began to accept, eventually breaking down and admitting that his letter-writing campaign 'was the act of a desperate man, who had no one to turn to for help.'
The final paragraph of the report is possibly one of the bleakest and most heart wrenching statements from anyone involved in this feud- "...he told me that all he wished is to be given an opportunity to write comics, which is all he seems to know how to do..."
Letter is in good condition with minor rust migration from the staple attaching the five pages. 8" x 13".

Jerry Siegel Sealed Feud Letter to Murray Boltinoff (November 22, 1951)Published 1951$2,000.00- Siegel's barrage of letters to National Comics employees at all levels on November 22, 1951 was likely widely discussed in the company's offices. This one to editor Murray Boltinoff was never opened as Boltinoff was likely made aware of its contents and gave it to the company's legal department still sealed. Letter is sealed in its original mailing envelope and is presumed to be in good condition. 6 1/2" x 3 1/2".
