Comic Book Marketplace (1991 Gemstone) comic books 2002-2004

  • Issue #89A
Comic Book Marketplace (1991 Gemstone) 89A

Special issue featuring legendary Prince Valiant creator HAL FOSTER and Liberty Meadows creator FRANK CHO! Comic Book Marketplace #89 features a major article on the life and career of HAL FOSTER, artist on Tarzan (1931-37) and Prince Valiant (1937-1980). Despite his standing as one of the pre-eminent comic strip artists of all time, no complete, well- researched biographies have been written about Foster. Now, author Brian Kane has written what will surely become the major reference work on his life and career in a new book from Vanguard Press. The book is due to hit this fall, and CBM #89 will contain a review of the book by Russ Cochran along with photos and excerpts from the book. What makes hot young artist FRANK CHO so popular with comic strip veterans like AL WILLIAMSON? His daily and Sunday Liberty Meadows strips (and their comic book counterpart) have regularly poked fun at classic comic strips (Peanuts, Cathy, Tarzan, and others, including Prince Valiant), but the established masters of the form seem to love him. What's behind the pop culture machine that is Frank Cho? Find out about that, the success of his recent coffee table books, and the final fate of Liberty Meadows in Comic Book Marketplace #89! CBM #89?Cover A (Hal Foster)$5.95 CBM #89?Cover B (Frank Cho)$5.95 Cover price $5.95.

It was way back in 1928 when Hollywood discovered a brand new star who was destined to become a worldwide favorite who would neve grow old. Born on a train going from Kansas City to Hollywood, his name was Mickey Mouse. Soon, his immense popularity at the Box Office led to a starring role in the daily comic strips, and then to the color Sunday sections. Mickey Mouse magazines and Big Little Books, wristwatches, Lionel train cars, and countless other commercial endorsements followed. He finally got his own regular comic book series with Walt Disney's Comics and Stories and Dell one-shots. As other genres of comics came and went, the popularity of Mickey, Donal Duck, and the other Disney characters remained strong with comic book readers. Revived in the 1980s and 90s by Bruce Hamilton's Gladstone Comics, these classic stories became available to a new generation of comic book readers. Soon after Action Comics #1 hit the newsstands in 1938, it became clear that comic books were the next big thing. Victor S. Fox was, at that time, an accountant for DC comics, and he lost no time in leaving DC and setting up his own comic titles, starting with Wonderman in Wonder Comics #1. After DC won a lawsuit that claimed that Wonderman was a rip-off of Superman, Fox quickly branched out into titles like Mystery Men, Fantastic, Science, Blue Beetle, Weird and The Flame. CBM #107 tells the story of Victor Fox from 1938 through the early 1950s. Also including our regular features! Magazine, PC $6.95 Cover price $6.95.

The theme of CBM #110 centers on those comic artists who use the medium of painting for their covers and interior stories. Since the beginnings of comic books in the 1930s, this has been a medium in which the artwork was always done in ink with a brush or pen, with the coloring added in the printing process. But in recent years, artists like Alex Ross, Scott Hampton, Joe Jusko, David Mack, John K Snyder III, Steve Rude, Bill Sienkiewicz and John Van Fleet have been creating fully rendered paintings for their covers and interior pages. And then there's Carl Barks and Alex Schomberg, who, after a lifetime of creating ink art, turned to painting in their retirement to create paintings for fans. Don't miss an intriguing look into a highly specialized area of comics creation, along with the usual great CBM features. We all know that EC's Tales From the Crypt, Vault of Horror and Haunt of Fear started a New Trend in comics which other publishers were quick to imitate. After being virtually eradicated by the Comics Code in the mid-1950s, horror comics have struggled back to the newsstand in the form of magazines like Creepy and Eerie in the 1960s and 1970s. What is the future of horror comics? That's the question we pose in Comic Book Marketplace #114. We've also got great columns by: Michelle Nolan ? Most comic books are a collaborative creation of many minds. The concept, the writing, the layout, the penciling, the inking and the lettering can involve the talents of many people. But there were a few creators of comic books, like Will Eisner, Carl Barks, Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman and John Stanley, who produced their works as solo efforts. These are the auteurs of comics. CBM #115 takes a look at these giants. We've also got great columns by: Michelle Nolan ? Nolan's Notebook and That Wonderful Year, Bill Baker ? Inspiration Central, Pat Calhoun ? In Comic Book Marketplace #116 we take a look at a serious topic: First, how Jews created the comic book in the first place, and then, how crusading publishers like William M. Gaines used this medium to fight against racism and anti-Semitism in stories like "Judgment Day," "Master Race" and the regular series of "preachies" which appeared in Shock SuspenStories in the early 1950s. Finally, how comics creators like Will Eisner, Joe Kubert and Art Spiegleman are using the medium to re-address these issues today, in the format of graphic novels.
