Volume 1 - 1st printing. "Rise of the Toa Nuva!" Collects Bionicle (2001-2005 DC) #1-8. Written by Greg Farshtey. Art by Carlos D'Anda, Richard Bennett, and Randy Elliott. The successful line of constructible action figures from LEGO comes to graphic novels! Six mighty heroes - the Toa - arrive on a tropical island to find a land under siege. The Great Spirit Mata Nui has been cast into an unending sleep by the evil Makuta. Now Makuta is attacking the island's Matoran villagers with vicious Rahi beasts. The Toa must combine their skills and elemental and mask powers to defeat Makuta and restore peace to the island. Then, the Toa return to the island named for Mata Nui to find it is being overrun by mechanical insects called Bohrok. These Bohrok have been unleashed by Makuta and are rapidly destroying trees, mountains, rivers, villages and anything else in their path. After a long, difficult battle, the Toa are able to defeat the queens of the swarms and end the Bohrok threat - for now. With the help of the legendary Mask of Time, the Toa Nuva are able to defeat the Kal. Meanwhile, a Matoran villager named Takua has stumbled upon the long-hidden Mask of Light. He and his best friend, Jaller, are sent by the village elders, the Turaga, to find the Toa to whom the mask is destined to belong. The city they come back to bares little resemblance to the Metru Nui of old; it is an industrial jungle full of wild beasts and fallen infrastructure. Earthquakes have ravaged the buildings, large webs surround structures, and the dangerous Rahi roam the streets. the deadly Visorak have taken over Metru Nui. When the Toa Metru confront the Visorak fighters, they are injected with a dark poison that radically changes them into Toa Hordika: half hero, half beast. This new dual nature forces them to fight not only their enemies, but also the dark side that has been distilled within them. It is up to the Toa Metru to save the city of Metru Nui from the Sidorak, the Visorak king, and his sinister viceroy, Roodaka; and to save each other from themselves.
