A companion series to Crime Does Not Pay from the same publisher, slightly less violent and with more emphasis on police work. Joe Bologna's double-dealing and knack for exaggerating his accomplishments earns him the mob nickname Baloney Bender. Lesley's drinking and gambling ruin his marriage and life and eventually turn him into a criminal. In the early 1900s, rural nurse Bertha Gifford becomes one of the first female serial killers. This issue was mentioned in the text of the classic anti-comics tome Seduction of the Innocent. A criminal takes the name Trigger Hancock and starts a gang to rival Grimmler's band of international thieves who want to heist Fort Knox, but he's actually setting a trap. A stray kite is the clue that leads the Chessmen to the villainous Ventor, who launches death from above by rocket. Action girl Madelon is the only person who can stop mad Ventor from launching his destructive rocket from his ruined castle. Hired to deliver a mysterious package, Crime Smasher discovers a dead body and tries to figure out the meaning of the three-legged rabbit statue. Crime Smasher goes after a mob boss and his army of goons, facing a sinister trap by two thugs dressed as women. A Death Row inmate's last request is that Crime Smasher prove that his innocence by catching the real killer. The issue and the series leads off with one of the most famous female outlaws, bank robber Bonnie Parker (and her partner Clyde Barrow); Don and Bud Hoover try to get away with murder; Frankie Yale's bid for underworld power earns him a nickname: the Al Capone of Brooklyn. The art on the cover is not up (or down) to later standards, but the dialogue is priceless.
