Painted cover by Norman Saunders. Stories and art by Everett Raymond Kinstler, Mike Suchorsky, and Irv Novick. Two #10s exist. See previous Ziff Davis Series (1950-51) for the other one. Neither a tie-in with the later toy line/cartoon nor a grim war comic, this first-gen GI Joe focused on lighthearted tales of military life. The Yardbirds, featuring Pvts. Windy and Whitey, was straight-up comedy of the Beetle Bailey/Sad Sack variety. Chip runs into old flame Harriet on the Korean front, but now he's a private and she's a lieutenant, in romance-flavored war story. Beautiful enemy agent Lilith the Tigress returns, in a story with Milton Caniff-ish art by Irv Novick. A Southern GI captured by the enemy tries to explain the US Civil War to a North Korean colonel. G.I. Cover by Marvin Bradley and Frank Edgington. Stories and art by Marvin Bradley and Frank Edgington. The first issue of this showcase series from future children's publisher Harvey has a place in comics history. It reprints the comic strip Rex Morgan, MD, by Marvin Bradley and Frank Edgington, featuring a standard anti-drug storyline. But the lurid pre-Code cover blurb and art attracted the attention of anti-comics crusader Dr. Frederic Wertham, who mentioned it in the text of his anti-comics classic Seduction of the Innocent (p. 27). The Comics Code, of course, was soon to follow. Rex Morgan, MD: Teen-Age Dope Slaves; Meet the Creators of Rex Morgan, M.D. 36 pages, Full Color. Cover price $0.10.
