  • Issue #1
    Morphos the Shapechanger (1996) 1

1st Printing - Written by Burne Hogarth and Harry Hurwitz. Art by Burne Hogarth. Step back 60 years ago to a time when comics -- a new medium born in excitement, innocence, and great aspiration -- were capturing the attention of readers everywhere. This is the time in which Burne Hogarth came and changed the face of sequential storytelling with his all-time-classic strips "Tarzan" and "Prince Valiant." Over the last several years, Hogarth and his collaborator, screenwriter Harry Hurwitz, had been working on a new comics series, one which would do for the comics of the 1990s what his earlier work had done for those of the 1930s and 1940s. The result is Morphos the Shapechanger. Hogarth and Hurwitz had created the first installment of a four-issue miniseries which will, sadly, never be completed due to their untimely deaths. Dark Horse is proud to present the first complete, full-color chapter in its entirety, packaged in deluxe format with the finished script of the subsequent issues. The text is profusely illustrated with both preliminary and finished artwork by Hogarth. This is a story of hope that ends with a promise for a better tomorrow, and we only wish we could see what that complete vision would have been. FC. Cover price $4.95.

Volume 1 - 1st printing. "Hellcat Aces of World War 2!" Written by Barrett Tillman. Art by Mark Styling. Grumman's successor to the pugnacious Wildcat, the Hellcat embodied many of the lessons learnt by F4F pilots in the opening months of the Pacific war. Introduced to the fleet in January 1943, and blooded in combat against the Japanese by VF-5 seven months later, the F6F served as the principal US Navy fighter on board carrier decks until VJ-Day. Despite its lethality in the air when ranged against the best Japanese fighters, it still retained docile handling qualities around the carrier deck. Pilots flying the Hellcat claimed nearly 5000 kills in the Pacific, and over 350 pilots achieved ace status on the type. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $22.95.

Volume 295 - 1st printing. "Imperial Chinese Armies (2)!" Written by CJ Peers. Art by Michael Perry. By AD 589, when Yang Chien established himself at the head of a newly reformed Chinese empire, nearly four centuries had elapsed since the fall of the last great imperial dynasty: the Han. Although Yang's new Sui regime consciously modelled itself on its great predecessor, both China and the world outside had changed. The problem for the Sui and their successors was no longer simply to 'overawe the barbarians', but to deal as equals with other cultures that were just as proud and self-confident as their own. Chris Peers examines the imperial armies of China from 590-1260 AD, covering their history, organisation and tactics. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 296 - 1st printing. "Louis XV's Army (1)!" Written by René Chartrand. Art by Eugene Leliepvre. France had a population of between 22 and 25 million at this time, and maintained the largest standing army in Europe. In peacetime it might have amounted to about 200,000 men; in times of war, it could be anything up to half a million. A substantial part of Louis XV's army consisted of numerous regiments of guard cavalry, heavy cavalry and dragoon regiments, which were considered the best and noblest part. These many units form the subject matter in this first of five fascinating volumes [Men-at-Arms 296, 302, 304, 308 & 313] by René Chartrand covering the army of Louis XV's. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 297 - 1st printing. "Russian Army of the Seven Years War (1)!" Written by Angus Konstam. Art by Bill Younghusband. During the long and costly conflict known as the Great Northern War [1700-1721], Peter the Great and his newly formed Russian army, which was modelled on western European lines, defeated their Swedish counterparts, who were generally regarded as being the finest troops in Europe. Angus Konstam examines the development, equipment and organisation of the Russian army following the death of Peter the Great, and describes its emergence from three decades of experimentation and political involvement as a major military power during the Seven Years War. This first of two volumes covers the Russian infantry, with its companion, Men-at-Arms 298, focusing on the cavalry. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 16 - 1st printing. "British Tommy 1914-18!" Written by Martin Pegler. Art by Mike Chappell. The World War 1 was a watershed in British military and social history, and even now the repercussions can still be felt. No town or village in the British Isles escaped casualty, and the creative genius of a generation was wiped out, at an incalculable loss to society. This book looks in detail at how the British soldier lived, fought and died during the traumatic war years. Enlistment, training and all aspects of life on active service are carefully examined, including discipline, relaxation and even the type and quality of food that soldiers ate. The analysis of the British infantryman's experience is greatly aided by the memories of old soldiers, which provide an interesting and often vivid account of life on the Western Front. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.
