The Camel was renowned for its sensitivity and need for skill and experience, and casualties amongst pilots undergoing training on the type were very high. More than 5490 examples were constructed, and this book covers its combat use on the Western Front, in Palestine, on the Italian front, in the Home Defence role in the UK and in Russia. Art by Harry Dempsey.Designed in a great rush at the end of 1917 just in time to take part in the German standard fighter competition held in January/February 1918, the D VII easily walked away with first prize. As Germanys premier fighter unit, von Richthofens JG I (led by Hermann Göring in the wake of the 'Red Baron's' recent death) received the first examples of the D VII to reach the frontline in late April. Built to oppose the new generation of French SPAD XIIIs and British SE 5as and Camel fighters, the D VII was arguably the best all-round fighting scout of the Great War. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W. Volume 119 - 1st printing. "Marston Moor 1644!" Written by John Tincey. Art by Graham Turner. The entry of the Scots into the English Civil War on 19 January 1644 on the side of Parliament radically changed the balance of power in the North of England. The Royalists in the North were forced onto the defensive and besieged in York. In a bold march Prince Rupert outmanoeuvred his enemies and relieved York without a shot being fired. However, when Rupert met the allied army in battle on Marston Moor on 2 July his cavalry was defeated by Cromwell's Ironsides who then turned on the Royalist infantry. The result was a hard-fought but catastrophic defeat; the Royalist army was crushed and their forces driven from the north of England. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

  • Issue #89-1ST
Osprey Elite Series SC (1984-2008 OSPREY) 89-1ST

Volume 89 - 1st printing. "American Civil War Commanders Part 3!" Written by Philip Katcher. Art by Richard Hook. When the War Between the States broke out in 1861, the US Army had only four line generals - and three of those were over 70 years of age and veterans of the Napoleonic period. About one in three of America's professional officers chose to serve the Confederacy, and the government's urgent need to find commanders for its vastly expanded army put stars on the shoulders of men of very varied backgrounds and talents. The trials of war would soon separate the born leaders from the over-promoted and the political opportunists. This second volume devoted to Union generals examines the careers and personalities of 25 commanders whose service was mainly, or at first, in the Western theater of war. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

  • Issue #49-1ST
Osprey Essential Histories SC (2001) 49-1ST

Volume 49 - 1st printing. "The Suez Crisis 1956!" By Derek Varble. In July 1956 Egyptian President Gamal Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal, causing immediate concern to Britain and France. They already opposed Nasser and were worried at the threat to maritime traffic in the Canal. This book traces the course of subsequent events. Together with Israel, Britain and France hatched a plot to occupy the Canal Zone and overthrow Nasser. Israel attacked Sinai, and Britain and France launched offensives throughout Egypt, but strategic failures overshasdowed tactical success. Finally, Britain, France and Israel bowed to international pressure and withdrew, leaving the Suez Canal, and Egypt, firmly in the hands of President Nasser. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $17.95.

Volume 51 - 1st printing. "The Franco-Prussian War 1870-1871!" By Stephen Badsey. The Franco-Prussian War broke out in 1870 when Bismarck engineered a war with the French Second Empire under Napoleon III. This was part of his wider political strategy of uniting Prussia with the southern German states, excluding Austria. The war was an overwhelming Prussian victory, and King Wilhelm I was proclaimed Emperor of the new united Germany. The Second Empire collapsed and Napoleon III became an exile in Britain. In the peace settlement with the French Third Republic in 1871 Germany gained the eastern French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, areas that were to provide a bone of contention for years to come. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

  • Issue #387-1ST
    Osprey Men-at-Arms Series SC (1973-2011 OSPREY) 387-1ST

Volume 387 - 1st printing. "The Italian Army of World War I !" Written by David Nicolle. Art by Raffaele Ruggeri. The dilemma of the young Italian kingdom and the experience of her army in the Great War were unique among the combatant nations. Late to enter the war against the Central Powers, she faced a massively defended Austro-Hungarian front in the north, including strong mountain features, as well as distractions in the Balkans and a simultaneous rebellion in her Libyan colony. Costly and repeated battles on the Isonzo front culminated in the disaster of Caporetto in October 1917, followed by a remarkable revival and eventual victory in 1918. This concise study describes and illustrates the Italian Army's campaigns, organisation, uniforms, weapons and equipment – including the famous 'death companies' and Arditi assault troops. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 388 - 1st printing. "Zulu War -Volunteers, Irregulars & Auxiliaries!" Written by Ian Castle. Art by Raffaele Ruggeri. Mention of the Zulu War of 1879 inevitably conjures up images of the redcoats at Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift; it is often forgotten that the limited number of Imperial troops available led to the raising of several thousand local troops from Natal, Cape Colony and beyond. Typified by hard-riding white frontiersmen and lightly armed African infantry, these units made up for the British Army's severe shortage of cavalry scouts and local knowledge. Ian Castle's concise study of their organisation, uniforms, weapons, and campaign service covers a far wider range of units than ever previously published; it is illustrated with rare photographs and vivid colour plates. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

  • Issue #67-1ST
Osprey Warrior Series SC (1993-2011 OSPREY) 67-1ST

Volume 67- 1st printing. "The Cossacks 1799-1815 !" Written by Laurence Spring. Art by Philip Haythornthwaite and Adam Hook. During the Napoleonic Wars, the Cossacks were Russia's unique and plentiful supply of irregular cavalry. They were employed as skirmishers, raiders and scouts, and their tactics of harassment and harrying caused great problems for Napoleon's Grand Armée as it retreated through Russia in 1812. This title shows how, although labelled as rapacious, lascivious, mercenary and ill-disciplined on the field by their detractors, they laid claim to being the finest light cavalry in Europe. This book also details the various tribes that made up the Cossack nation, the social structure of Cossack life, and how they were organised and employed in war. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

    Paradigm (2002 Image) 7

    (W) Matt Cashel. (P) Jeremy Haun. (I) Elizabeth Jacobson. BW, 40pp. The Concept: "Coincidental Residue"?Another great jumping-on point! A soap-opera charting the ups and downs of the final generation of "mankind" where every scene counts and seemingly ambiguous truths are finally understood. Paradigm is a comic series that allows the everyday bar conversation and lovers' spat to take the fore-front of GONZO world changing events. An epic tale, a heroic quest, of an ensemble cast that attempts to remember the past in a new world where passions, under-city dwellers, trolls, fairies, conspiracies, and parallel hopping detectives thrive. Paradigm is an experiment in progress. This Issue: A traveler from far away arrives in the city of Bogsdale carrying with him an evil not intended for this world. At least that's what the dwarf told him. Meanwhile, Ethan and his new cat find themselves on the receiving end of sociopathic Dick's hand cannon, Rusty leaves the restroom, and Summer discovers that "trust no one" is more than a catchy pop-phrase. Cover price $2.95.
