Volume 112 - 1st printing. "Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank 1987–2006!" Written by Simon Dunstan. Art by Tony Bryan. The Challenger 2 is the current Main Battle Tank of the British Army and represents the culmination of 80 years of tank design. In 1987, its design was presented to the Ministry of Defence in response to a requirement to replace the Chieftain MBT that had been partially superseded by the Challenger 1 MBT. Production began in 1993, and the tank finally entered service in 2002. The tank recently appeared in Iraq, where it proved indispensable during the battle of Basra. This book covers the evolution of the Challenger 2, from its origins and testing to its involvement in the Middle East and Iraq. Softcover, 48 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $17.95.

Volume 123 - 1st printing. "Swimming Shermans!" Written by David Fletcher. Art by Tony Bryan. The Sherman DD (Duplex Drive) tank was a brilliant innovation; the design and development of a tank that could float and even 'swim' in water was controversial. Each tank was enveloped in a waterproofed canvas screen, launched at sea from landing craft and then 'swam' to shore, where the screens were deflated, allowing the tanks to operate as fighting vehicles. This book discusses the Sherman DD's many variants, including the prototype Valentine DD tank and examines the successes and tragic failures on the beaches of Normandy and further into North-West Europe, including the challenge of crossing the River Rhine. Softcover, 48 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $17.95.

Volume 166 - 1st printing. "Assaye 1803!" Written by Simon Miller. Art by Peter Dennis. Wellington said that of all his battles Assaye, fought during the Second Maratha War (1803-05) in central India, was 'the bloodiest for the numbers that I ever saw'. A small British force, under Major-General the Honourable Arthur Wellesley (as Wellington was then known), crossed into Maratha territory in March 1803 to restore the Peshwa to his throne. On September 23, Wellesley encountered what turned out to be the entire Maratha army in a strong position on the banks of the Kailna River. The battle witnessed costly infantry and cavalry assaults, but was won by the steadiness of Wellesley's troops and his inspiring leadership. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 168 - 1st printing. "Flodden 1513!" Written by John Sadler. Art by Stephen Walsh. On 9 September 1513 Flodden field was the site for one of Scotland's most famous battles, often termed their greatest defeat. The Scottish Army led by their courageous king, James IV, was strong in artillery and trained in new tactics from the Swiss doctrine, whereas the English Army they faced still favoured traditional tactics. Despite the strength of the Scots the English men-at-arms fought ferociously and by nightfall the field was strewn with the bodies of the Scottish nobility, and the tragic figure of the dead James IV. This book examines the strategies of the opposing armies and the significant effect of the weapons, including longbow and artillery, which they deployed. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 169 - 1st printing. "Somme 1 July 1916!" Written by Andrew Robertshaw. Art by Peter Dennis. The first day of the battle of the Somme has always been perceived as a day of tragedy for the British Army, with the slaughter of 60,000 men on the battlefield. What seemed to be poor planning on the part of the British command meant that soldiers were sent into no man's land to face the horrors of uncut barbed wire and waves of German machine gun fire. However, there were triumphs amongst the tragedy. This book discusses the successes and failures of the British and the German forces along the frontline. It also offers a detailed account of the battle itself, following the actions of individual units throughout the day. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Some were dedicated supporters of the Nazi regime; others were motivated simply by patriotism and their military training. Every commander has an individual colour portrait expertly drawn by the respected World War II illustrator Malcolm McGregor. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

Volume 406 - 1st printing. "The British Army in World War I (3) !" Written by Mike Chappell. Art by Mike Chappell. Although Britain's greatest commitment of land forces was on the Western Front, British, Empire and Dominion troops also fought in other theatres of operations – and in some cases continued to fight there after the Armistice had ended hostilities in the West. This last of our series of three titles describes these far-flung campaigns, in Italy, the Balkans, the Middle East, several parts of Africa, Russia, China, and even the North-West Frontier of India. The text is illustrated with contemporary photographs, and with meticulous colour plates of British, African, Indian and Australian troops, in the uniforms and equipment used on battle fronts from the desert sands to the snows of north Russia. Volume 29 - 1st printing. "Modelling the Challenger 1 and 2 MBT and Variants!" By Graeme Davidson and Pat Johnston. Introduced to the British Army in 1983, Challenger Main Battle Tanks have served operationally in the Balkans and both Gulf Wars, where their firepower, protection and shock action were instrumental to the success of British forces. This book covers a wide range of these variants, with each chapter presenting a different build using colour photos to illustrate scratch-building, painting and weathering techniques across a variety of skill levels. Volume 104- 1st printing. "Tudor Knight!" Written by Christopher Gravett. Art by Graham Turner. The Tudor knight was the first line of defence employed by monarchs from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I, the last of a long tradition of knighthood dating back to the 11th century. Knighthood during the Tudor era saw reforms in recruitment, appearance, and most radically in training and equipment. This book details those changes, profiling the knight's appearance and dress, life on campaign, and experience of battle in France, Scotland and Ireland. It also explores the concept of chivalry, as sensationally enacted by Henry VIII and Francis I of France at the celebrated Field of Cloth of Gold near Calais, in 1520. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

  • Issue #105-1ST

Before the American Civil War most Native Americans or Indians lived in an area of the South known as the Five Civilized Nations. At the war's outbreak many of these Indians enlisted in the Confederate and Union armies, and were organized into regiments of mounted riflemen. They were motivated to protect their land and way of life, often fighting against their fellow Indians from other Tribes. This book explores these fascinating warriors, and their controversial actions in battles, such as Pea Ridge and Bird Creek, using contemporary sources to detail not only their battle experience but also their beliefs and views of the war. Volume 1 - 1st printing. "1942-1943!" Story and art by Walt Kelly. Early work from the creator of the celebrated Pogo syndicated strip! Along with fellow Disney alumnus Carl Barks, Walt Kelly is now considered one of the two classic 'funny animal' artists from the golden age of comics. Surprisingly, Kelly's longest-running continuing series was based on actual people, the 'real-life' characters of MGM's durable short-film series, Our Gang (a.k.a. The Little Rascals). Spirited and engaging, Kelly's Our Gang harks back to the days before television, when kids spent most of their time playing outdoors, limited only by each other's imagination and ingenuity. Kelly created nearly 100 Our Gang stories by the end of its 59-issue run in 1949, the year he quit comic books to switch careers a final time as syndicated artist/writer on the immortal newspaper strip, Pogo. This is the first in a series of books reprinting Walt Kelly's Our Gang stories. Suitable for both adults and children, Fantagraphics Books has lovingly restored the work from their comic book appearance, which will be printed in their original four-color splendor. Introduction by Film critic, historian and author, Leonard Maltin. Softcover, 7-in. x 9 1/2-in., 104 pages, full color. Cover price $12.95.
