This one's a wacky entry and no denying, with Canadian publisher Superior Comics coming into the four-color horror ring all gloved up and swinging fit to punch the lights out of anybody who stands in their way. They kicked off with Journey Into Fear, Strange Mysteries (as opposed to pretty straightforward and perhaps even slightly boring mysteries), and the one-word extravaganza that was Mysteries, the latter calling itself variously Mysteries (its legal title) and, on the cover, Mysteries Weird and Strange.

The earlier tales were bizarre and quirky and it's pretty clear that inspiration was in short supply that day. Good stuff though, Clancy, with pens, pencils and plots coming from, among others, Jay Disbrow and the Igor Shop: clear a space on the shelf pronto.

St. John was a mid-sized comics publisher with a varied list of titles, and in June 1952 they joined the horror binge with two titles, Strange Terrors and Weird Horrors. Strange Terrors ended after seven issues, to be replaced by Nightmare #3, picking up from the Ziff-Davis series. I've had a thing for ACG comics for a long time but while I've had runs of the company's Adventures Into The Unknown and Forbidden Worlds on my shelves I've only ever had but one issue of Operation Peril so this latest title on the PS Artbooks roster is a total winner for me, with issues 1 through 4 boasting stories by Richard Hughes (of course) and artwork by, among others, the one and only Ogden Whitney (double of course!) and yarns of adventure and science fiction in which Tom and Peggy use their time machine to counter an alien invasion from Saturn; Typhoon Tyler tries to stop Captain Cobra from stealing native gold in the tropics and whole host of other stuff like to make your eyes water.

Harking from the very early 1950s, this stuff is priceless, choc-full as it is with work from the likes of Sheldon Moldoff, Bob Powell, Bernard Baily, Mike Sekowsky, George Evans, Lou Cameron, Mo Marcus, Charles Nicholas and Doug Wildey. We're kind of excited already at the prospect of follow-up volumes of Fawcett strangeness.

Charlton Comics fared poorly when measured against the big guns of DC and Marvel, and that's a shame because they had lots to offer! Check out this five-comic volume featuring This Is Suspense #23-26 (Feb. 1955 to Aug. 1955) and the slightly renamed pre-Ditko Strange Suspense Stories, picking up the numbering with #27 in October of 1955.
