Valiant is proud to announce a new series of classic comic specials based on the old Western/Gold Key material! This material has been carefully reformatted, with some panels blown up and other panels shot down, to give the material a fresh viewpoint from today's style of storytelling. It is then lavishly recolored and packaged in a high quality format with covers by some of today's top artists. Produced with love and care for the source material, these are more than just mere reprints. TUROK - One of the true artistic geniuses of comics' Silver Age was Alberto Giolitti. His run on Turok, Son of Stone set the standard by which all Turok artists thereafter tried to live up to. Neal Adams has said Giolitti was the best draftsman that Gold Key ever published. This issue includes some of Giolitti's best work. Cover by Rags Morales. Cover price $2.95.

Volume 140 - 1st printing. "Monongahela 1754-55!" Written by René Chartrand. Art by Stephen Walsh. On 9 July 1755 amid the wilderness of North America, Britain suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in her history. General Braddock's army, a mixture of British regulars and American militia, was shattered, losing over 900 men from a force of 1,300. Braddock was killed and the remnants of his army rescued by his aide, Colonel George Washington. The origins of this defeat can be traced back to the death of a junior French officer little more than a year before in a relatively minor skirmish with a party of Virginian militia commanded by the same George Washington. René Chartrand examines the subsequent chain of events that ultimately sparked a world war. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 59 - 1st printing. "The Plains Wars 1757-1900!" By Charles M Robinson III. The Great Plains cover the central two-thirds of the United States, and during the nineteenth century were home to some of the largest and most powerful Indian tribes on the continent. The conflict between those tribes and the newcomers from the Old World lasted about one hundred and fifty years, and required the resources of five nations - Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America and the United States - before fighting ended in the mid 1890s. This masterly exposition explains the background, causes and long term effects of these bitter wars, whose legacy can still be felt today. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $17.95.

Volume 54 - 1st printing. "Forts of the American Frontier 1820-91!" Written by Ron Field. Art by Adam Hook. During the 1840s, the rarely visited "Great American Desert" of the Southern Plains and Southwest became part of the inexorable westward expansion, as European traders and settlers headed overland from the eastern seaboard. The traditional lands of the Creek, Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Seminole Indians were quickly absorbed, and the rapid advance of the frontier soon brought the white man into conflict with the Kiowa, Comanche, Apache and Navajo tribes. Numerous posts and forts were built to protect trading posts and settlers, and to police the Indian reservations. This title explores the design and development of these sites, the life of the garrisons that manned them, and the clashes with Native American warriors such as Geronimo, Manuelito and Quanah Parker. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $18.95.

Volume 163 - 1st printing. "The American Plains Indians!" Written by Jason Hook. Art by Richard Hook. The central plains of North America to the east of the Rocky Mountains were home to the Plains Indians; here the hunting grounds of the twelve typical tribes coincided with the grazing range of the largest of the buffalo herds. The adoption of a horse culture heralded the golden age of the Plains Indians an age abruptly ended by the intervention of the white man, who forced them into reservations in the second half of the 19th century. Jason Hook's fascinating text explores the culture of American Plains Indians, from camp life to conquest, in a volume complemented by photographs and stunning artwork. Men-at-Arms 163 and 186 and Warrior 4 are also available in a single volume special edition as To Live and Die in the West'. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 288 - 1st printing. "American Indians of the Southeast!" Written by Michael G Johnson. Art by Richard Hook. The southeastern people were the descendants of ancient prehistoric Indian cultures, and were probably on the decline when first known to Europeans. Despite being poorly reported in popular histories, they have been well described by several early European traders and by a number of well-known American ethnologists who collected details of surviving native culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The white man's expanding plantation society and the tragic removal of the Indian population to Indian Territory saw the end of this farming, hunting and trading culture. This title examines the absorbing history and culture of the native peoples of the southeastern United States. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 395 - 1st printing. "Tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy!" Written by Michael G Johnson. Art by Jonathan Smith. The Five (later Six) Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy were central to the story of the white colonization of the American Northeast. The European fur trade transformed their world, and the struggles between English and French colonists forced the tribes to take sides. Sir William Johnson's efforts in the Mohawk Valley ensured that the Iroquois Nations were allies of the British crown; and the loyalty of his kinsman Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea) during the American Revolution forced the Mohawks into Canadian exile. This richly illustrated book introduces Iroquois history, social organization, religion and material culture. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 75- 1st printing. "Comanche 1800-74!" Written by Douglas V Meed. Art by Jonathan Smith. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the numerous tribes of mounted Comanche warriors were the Lords of the Southern Plains. For more than 150 years, these ferocious raiders struck terror into the hearts of other plain tribes, Mexican villagers and Anglo settlers in frontier Texas. Their dominion stretched from southern Colorado and Kansas into northern Mexico. This book documents the life and experiences of a Comanche warrior at the peak of their dominance. Following a hypothetical figure through a lifetime, it covers key social and cultural aspects as well as documenting the methods and equipment that they used to wage war. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

Volume 127- 1st printing. "Native American Code Talker in World War II!" Written by Ed Gilbert. Art by Raffaele Ruggeri. 'Were it not for the Navajo Code Talkers the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima and other places' (Anonymous, Marine Corps signal officer). Ed Gilbert uses personal interviews with veterans to tell their fascinating story. Beginning with the first operational use of Native American languages in World War I, he explores how in World War II the US again came to employ this subtle, but powerful 'weapon.' Despite all efforts, the Japanese were never able to decode their messages and the Navajo code talkers contributed significantly to US victories in the Pacific. Approximately 400 Navajos served in this crucial role. Their legend of the 'code talker' has been celebrated by Hollywood in films, such as Windtalkers, and this book reveals the real-life story of their extraordinary involvement in World War II. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.
