Volume 21 - 1st printing. "US Armored Units in the North African and Italian Campaigns 1942-45!" By Steven J Zaloga. The Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO) saw the first operational deployment of US armoured divisions in World War II, and the experience proved chastening for the 1st Armored Division when it suffered defeat at the hands of Rommel's Afrika Korps at the battle of Kasserine Pass. This title covers the organization of these early US armored divisions, as well as the independent tank and tank destroyer battalions that accompanied them. It details the evolution of US armoured warfare tactics and doctrine, learned from the difficult experiences of North Africa, and illustrates how they were used elsewhere in the Mediterranean, particularly in the Italian Peninsula. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $25.95.

Volume 88 - 1st printing. "Operation Cobra 1944!" Written by Steven J Zaloga. Art by Tony Bryan. One of the most decisive months of World War II was the 30 days between 25 July and 25 August 1944. After the success of the D-Day landings, the Allied forces found themselves bogged down in a bloody stalemate in Normandy. On 25 July General Bradley launched Operation Cobra to break the deadlock. US forces punched a hole in the German frontline and began a spectacular advance. As Patton's Third Army poured into Brittany and raced south to the Loire, the German army was threatened with encirclement. By the end of August German forces in Normandy were utterly destroyed, and the remaining German units in central and southern France were in headlong retreat to the German frontier. In this title Steve Zaloga explains how the breakout from Normandy came about. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $19.95.

Volume 110 - 1st printing. " Peleliu 1944!" Written by Gordon L Rottman and Jim Moran. Art by Howard Gerrard. Equalling Tarawa, Iwo Jima and Okinawa in scale and ferocity, the battle for Peleliu has long been regarded as the Pacific War's "forgotten battle", and perhaps one that should never have been fought. A massive carrier-based attack some weeks before the invasion destroyed all aircraft and shipping in the area and virtually isolated the Japanese garrison. 1st Marine Division commander, General Rupertus, made extravagant claims that the capture of Peleliu would "only take three days - maybe two." But the Japanese fought a bloody battle of attrition from prepared positions an in a struggle of unprecedented savagery a whole Marine Division was bled white. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 118 - 1st printing. "The Yom Kippur War 1973 Part1!" Written by Simon Dunstan. Art by Howard Gerrard. At 1345hrs on 6 October 1973, Israeli spotters in the observation post atop Mount Hermon saw Syrian gunners below them removing the camouflage nets from their guns. Ten minutes later shells began to rain down on Israeli positions all along the Golan Heights - The Yom Kippur War had begun. The shock Syrian attack caught the Israelis by surprise and by the afternoon of 7 October a Syrian brigade was less than 10km from the Sea of Galilee. Simon Dunstan describes in detail how amid desperate and bitter fighting the Israeli forces managed to turn the tide on the Golan Heights. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 126 - 1st printing. "The Yom Kippur War 1973 Part 2!" Written by Simon Dunstan. Art by Kevin Lyles. Israel's victory in the 1967 'Six Day War' sowed the seeds of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. At 1400hrs on 6 October 1973 the Egyptian army launched an assault crossing of the Suez Canal. The carefully co-ordinated attack achieved complete tactical surprise. The sand embankments of the Israeli Bar-Lev Line were breached and an Israeli counterattack thrown back with heavy losses. In the second of his two-volume analysis of the Yom Kippur War, Simon Dunstan details the fighting in the Sinai, culminating in Operation Gazelle, the Israeli counterattack across the Suez Canal. Although defeated militarily Egypt did ultimately succeed in forcing the Israelis back to the negotiating table. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 127 - 1st printing. "Dieppe 1942!" Written by Ken Ford. Art by Howard Gerrard. The Dieppe raid of August 1942 is one of the most controversial actions of World War II. Operation 'Jubilee' was a frontal assault on a fortified port landing the latest equipment and armour directly on to the beach. The main force would destroy the port facilities while other smaller landings dealt with anti-aircraft and coastal batteries. The raid itself turned into a fiasco. The assault force was pinned down on the beach and three quarters of the 5,000 troops landed were lost. This book analyses the disastrous raid and examines contrasting conclusions drawn by the Allies and the Germans. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W W Cover price $19.95.

Operation Barbarossa, Germany's surprise assault on the Soviet Union in June 1941, aimed at nothing less than the complete destruction of Communist Russia. This book focuses on Field Marshal von Rundstedt and Army Group South, tasked with the capture of the Ukraine and Crimea. Von Rundstedt's 46 divisions and single Panzer Group faced fierce resistance from the best equipped, trained and commanded units in the Red Army, but ultimately succeeded in destroying the Soviet 6th and 12th Armies at Uman before inflicting a further 600,000 casualties at Kiev. Here, von Rundstedt's five-month advance to Rostov is examined in detail. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 136 - 1st printing. "Meiktila 1945!" Written by Edward Young. Art by Howard Gerrard. In the spring of 1944, Japanese 15th Army was shattered at Imphal and Kohima, allowing General William Slim, commander of 14th Army, to liberate Burma overland from India - a task considered impossible by the British chiefs of staff. Overcoming immense logistical problems, Slim coordinated a precisely timed attack along a 200-mile front, the longest opposed river crossing of the entire war, and an armored dash behind enemy lines that seized Meiktila, cutting Japanese supply lines. Mandalay fell and at the end of March 1945, with the battle lost, the Japanese withdrew south. Slim gave them no chance; Allied troops raced south and captured Rangoon. The Japanese army in Burma was finished. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

  • Issue #143-1ST
Osprey Campaign Series SC (1990-2011 OSPREY) 143-1ST

Volume 143 - 1st printing. " Caen 1944!" Written by Ken Ford. Art by Peter Dennis. One of the key objectives of British forces on D-Day was the capture of the strategically vital city of Caen. General Montgomery saw Caen as the key to Normandy and the springboard for the Allied breakout, but so did the Germans and the city did not fall. It took three major offensives and more than 30 bloody days of struggle to finally take Caen. In the process the city was controversially devastated and its civilian population decimated. The Allies paid a high price for Caen but the horrific German casualties bled their forces in Normandy white and helped open the way for the American breakout in Operation Cobra. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 146 - 1st printing. "The Marshall Islands 1944!" Written by Gordon L Rottman. Art by Howard Gerrard. Following the capture of Tarawa in November 1943, American eyes turned to the Marshall Islands. These were the next vital stepping-stone across the Pacific towards Japan, and would bring the islands of Guam and Saipan within the reach of US forces. In their first amphibious attack, the new 4th Marine Division landed on Roi and Namur islands on 1 February 1944, while US 7th Division landed on Kwajalein. At the time this was the longest shore-to-shore amphibious assault in history. The lessons of the bloody fighting on Tarawa had been well learned and the successful attack on the Marshalls set the pattern for future amphibious operations in the Pacific War. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 148 - 1st printing. "Operation Barbarossa 1941 Part 2!" Written by Robert Kirchubel. Art by Howard Gerrard and Peter Dennis. Of the German Army Groups that attacked Soviet Russia, Von Leeb's Army Group North, tasked with seizing the Baltic States and Leningrad, was the smallest and weakest. General Kuznetzov's Northwestern Front, however, was in an even weaker state. Despite brave counterattacks and defense by the Soviet forces, the Germans smashed through the Dvina Line, then the Stalin Line, flooded into Latvia and pressed on to encircle Leningrad. This book examines the German offensive and also the courageous Soviet attempts to halt the German spearhead, defending every possible line against overwhelming odds. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 150 - 1st printing. "Khe Sanh 1967-68!" Written by Gordon L Rottman. Art by Peter Dennis. Khe Sanh was a small village in northwest South Vietnam that sat astride key North Vietnamese infiltration routes. In September 1966 a Marine battalion deployed into the area. Action gradually increased as the NVA attempted to destroy Free World Forces bases, and the siege of Khe Sanh proper began in October 1967. The bitter fight lasted into July 1968 when, with the changing strategic and tactical situation, the base was finally closed. This book details the siege and explains how, although the NVA successfully overran a Special Forces camp nearby, it was unable to drive US forces from Khe Sanh. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

  • Issue #167-1ST
Osprey Campaign Series SC (1990-2011 OSPREY) 167-1ST

Volume 167 - 1st printing. "Moscow 1941!" Written by Robert Forczyk. Art by Howard Gerrard. Suffering a staggering loss of over 2 million troops by September 1941, Soviet forces were faced with the prospect of Hitler victoriously re-directing his powerful German armies toward the heart of Soviet Russia - Moscow. However, the season was late and the Germans found themselves in a race to launch a final decisive attack before the arrival of the dreaded Russian winter. Stalin desperately sought to play for time by mustering all available military resources to save his capital. This book is the story of Operation Typhoon, the largest German operational attack of the war and Hitler's desperate attempt to seize Moscow. With expert knowledge of the subject, author Robert A. Forczyk successfully manages to bring to life the battle which saw the most horrific losses for the Soviet defending forces and marked the first defeat of the Wehrmacht. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

  • Issue #181-1ST
Osprey Campaign Series SC (1990-2011 OSPREY) 181-1ST

Volume 181 - 1st printing. "Siegfried Line 1944-45!" Written by Steven J Zaloga. Art by Steve Noon. The campaign on the German frontier in late 1944 was one of the most frustrating and costly efforts by the US Army in the ETO. The Allies first encountered the Siegfried Line (Westwall) fortifications in September 1944, having pursued the retreating Wehrmacht through Belgium and the Netherlands. The border area around Aachen had been fortified with a double line of bunkers, and both the terrain and the weather made things difficult for the Allies. This book focuses on the involvement of the US First and Ninth armies in the six-month fighting, including the hellish fighting for the Hürtgen forest. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 183 - 1st printing. "Denmark and Norway 1940!" Written by Doug Dildy. Art by John White. On 9 April 1940, German forces invaded Denmark, and then Norway, in an attempt to guarantee security of Scandinavia's vital mineral resources for their war industry. This assault, Operation Weserübung, represented the first joint air-land-and-sea campaign in the history of warfare, and was the only such campaign planned by the Wehrmacht high command, including all three services of the Wehrmacht. This book describes the events of this tumultuous campaign that not only led to Winston Churchill's appointment as British Prime Minister, but also saw the crippling of the German Kriegsmarine as a fighting force. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

  • Issue #187-1ST
Osprey Campaign Series SC (1990-2011 OSPREY) 187-1ST

Volume 187 - 1st printing. "Cambrai 1917!" Written by Alexander Turner. Art by Peter Dennis. This crucial new study on one of the seminal events in military history dispells many of the myths surrounding Cambrai 1917. Common perception classifies it as the 'world's first tank battle' but Alexander Turner shows us that the true importance of Cambrai was that it saw the first use of armour as an operational shock tactic. With this, the conduct of war was irrevocably changed. The battle also heralded the combined use of aircraft, armour and artillery, marking the birth of modern combined-arms techniques. Written by a military historian and serving soldier, this is a fascinating analysis of a battle which ended a stalemate, yet spawned a host of war-winning tactics. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

  • Issue #194-1ST
Osprey Campaign Series SC (1990-2011 OSPREY) 194-1ST

Volume 194 - 1st printing. "Liberation of Paris 1944!" Written by Steven J Zaloga. Art by Howard Gerrard. In July 1944, Operation Cobra broke the stalemate in Normandy and sent the Allies racing across France. The Allied commanders had ignored Paris in their planning for this campaign, considering that the risk of intense street fighting and heavy casualties outweighed the city's strategic importance. However, Charles de Gaulle persuaded the Allied commanders to take direct action to liberate his nation's capital. Steven J Zaloga first describes the operations of Patton's Third Army as it advanced towards Paris before focussing on the actions of the Resistance forces inside the city and of the Free French armoured division that fought its way in and joined up with them to liberate it on the 24th August. On the back of this morale-boosting victory, De Gaulle could finally proclaim Paris to be liberated, as one of the world's loveliest cities survived Hitler's strident command that it should be held at all costs or razed to the ground. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

  • Issue #124-1ST
Osprey Elite Series SC (1984-2008 OSPREY) 124-1ST

Volume 124 - 1st printing. "World War II Infantry Anti-Tank Tactics!" Written by Gordon L Rottman. Art by Steve Noon. The battlefield interaction between infantry and tanks was central to combat on most fronts in World War II. The first 'Blitzkrieg' campaigns saw the tank achieve a new dominance. New infantry tactics and weapons - some of them desperately dangerous - had to be adopted, while the armies raced to develop more powerful anti-tank guns and new light weapons. By 1945, a new generation of revolutionary shoulder-fired AT weapons was in widespread use. This book explains in detail the shifting patterns of anti-tank combat, illustrated with photographs, diagrams and colour plates showing how weapons were actually employed on the battlefield. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

  • Issue #152-1ST
Osprey Elite Series SC (1984-2008 OSPREY) 152-1ST

Volume 152 - 1st printing. "The British Reconnaissance Corps in World War II!" Written by Richard Doherty. Art by Rob Chapman. This book recounts the combat service, and explains the organization, of the 'Recce' Corps, whose units provided the mobile spearhead of the British infantry divisions from the Far East to Europe. Trained to probe ahead and locate the enemy, and to screen the flanks and rearguard when under attack, the Recce troopers fought both from their light armoured vehicles and on foot. The text is illustrated with rare photos from private collections and colour illustrations of uniforms, insignia and the armoured cars of a corps whose contribution to victory was largely forgotten after disbandment at the close of World War II. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $18.95.

Volume 162 - 1st printing. "World War II Desert Tactics!" Written by Paddy Griffith. Art by Adam Hook. From 1940 to 1943 North Africa saw the first major desert campaign by modern mechanised armies. The British, Italians, German Afrika Korps and US Army all addressed and learned from the special problems - human, logistical, mechanical and tactical - of the desert environment, most significantly fighting in a terrain empty of resources and offering little chance of concealment. Paddy Griffith traces the fast-learned development in armour, artillery and infantry tactics in this exceptional arena and illustrates them with references to the major engagements in the North African theatre, which involved some of the greatest tacticians of World War II in one of the pivotal theatres. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

  • Issue #48-1ST
Osprey Essential Histories SC (2001) 48-1ST

Volume 48 - 1st printing. "The Second World War Part 4!" By Paul Collier. This book explores the idea that the Mediterranean theater of the Second World War was the first truly modern war. It was a highly mobile conflict, in which logistics were a critical and often deciding factor, and from the very beginning a close relationship between the land, sea, and air elements was vital. Victory could not be achieved by either side unless the three services worked in intimate cooperation. Each side advanced and withdrew across 1,000 miles of desert until the Axis forces were decisively defeated at El Alamein in 1942. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $14.95.

For the first three years of the Second World War the German Army's armoured formations dominated the world's battlefields. During this period the Panzerwaffe swept away all that was before them, achieving victories over numerically superior and sometimes better equipped opponents. This remarkable book by Martin Windrow deals with one of the German Army's most effective and feared rapid attack forces, including a summary of every Panzer division's war record and an extensive examination of uniforms, equipment and decorations. Softcover, 48 pages, PC/PB&W.

Volume 6 - 1st printing. "Modelling the SdKfz 251 Halftrack!" By Robert Oehler. The adoption of blitzkrieg tactics in the German Army prior to the start of World War II meant that Germany needed a new kind of fighting vehicle to transport troops around the battlefield in support of the Panzer spearheads. It was in response to this requirement that the armored halftrack was developed during the mid-1930s. The SdKfz 251 halftrack soon became one of the most numerous vehicles in German service during World War II, with over 15,000 produced. This book presents an expert guide to modelling the 75mm gun versions used by the US Army in the ETO, in 1/35 and 1/48 scale. The projects featured include an early M4A1 from Operation Husky (July 1943), an intermediate M4 during Operation Cobra (August 1944), an M4 mine-roller in the Ardennes (January 1945), and a M4A3 during Operation Grenade (February 1945). Softcover, 7-in. x 10-in., 80 pages, full color. Cover price $19.95.

Volume 40 - 1st printing. "Modelling the US Army M4 (76mm) Sherman Medium Tank!" By Steven J. Zaloga. The Sherman tank was the principal US and Allied tank of World War II - more Shermans were built than all German tanks combined. Not only were large numbers of Shermans manufactured, but a large number of variants emerged powered by different types of engines and with different types of hulls, turrets and other details, making it an ideal subject for any modeller. Steven J Zaloga takes on the Sherman tank in this book, providing a guide to four variants across a range of different skill levels, depicting differing colour schemes and techniques which are examined and illustrated in lavish full-colour step-by-step photographs. Softcover, 7-in. x 10-in., 80 pages, full color. Cover price $19.95.

  • Issue #90-1ST
Osprey Warrior Series SC (1993-2011 OSPREY) 90-1ST

Volume 90- 1st printing. "US Marine Corps Tank Crewman 1965-70!" Written by Ed Gilbert. Art by Howard Gerrard. By 1960, following Korea, tanks and their crews had proved themselves to be a fundamental part of the Marine Corps' combined arms team. When the Marines were ordered to Vietnam in 1965, they took their tanks with them. This book explores this decision, which created a political storm. The presence of the tanks became a lightning rod for accusations of an 'escalation' of the war. Nevertheless, the tanks not only proved their value in the anti-guerrilla campaigns, but also amid the bitter conventional fighting and extraordinary casualties at Hue City. The ability to undertake such radical change and to prevail demonstrated the versatility, courage and tenacity that are the hallmarks of the 'ordinary' Marine. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.
