This item is not in stock at MyComicShop. If you use the "Add to want list" tab to add this issue to your want list, we will email you when it becomes available.

1st printing. Edited by Qiana Whitted. Some comics fans view the industry's Golden Age (1930s-1950s) as a challenging time when it comes to representations of race, an era when the few black characters appeared as brutal savages, devious witch doctors, or unintelligible minstrels. Desegregating Comics assembles a team of leading scholars to explore how debates about the representation of blackness shaped both the production and reception of Golden Age comics. Some essays showcase rare titles like Negro Romance and consider the formal innovations introduced by black comics creators like Matt Baker and Alvin Hollingsworth, while others examine the treatment of race in the work of such canonical cartoonists as George Herriman and Will Eisner. Golden Age comics artists, writers, editors, distributors, and readers engaged in heated negotiations over how blackness should be portrayed, and the outcomes of those debates continue to shape popular culture today. Softcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 326 pages, PC. Cover price $34.95.

Volume 1 - 1st printing. "October 1941-February 1942!" Collects Rangers [of Freedom] Comics (1941-1952) #1-3. Stories and art by Joe Doolin, Bob Jenney, Jim Chambers, Stan Aschmeier, Al Walker, Walter Galli, Richard Case, and Don Lynch. The Rangers of Freedom were "Biff" Barkley, "Tex" Russell and Peter Cabot, three young men who were recruited by the FBI because their physical and mental fortitude made them "the best specimens of American youth." They donned patriotically themed bulletproof costumes, but they had no secret identities. Together with Ranger Girl they fought villainous Nazis and Japanese forces led by the Super-Brain and the Black Dragon Society. Though they had no powers, the Rangers were good fighters. And they needed to be - as Superbrain's hooded axeman raises his bloody blade over Ranger Girl - the Freedom Trio slammed into action in the classic "The Headsman of Hate"! Hardcover (with Slipcase), 184 pages, full color. Cover price $62.99.

Volume 1 - 1st printing. "1944 to Spring 1946!" Collects The Spirit (1944-1950 Quality) #1-4. Cover by Lou Fine. The Spirit is a fictional masked crime fighter created by cartoonist Will Eisner, who fights crime with the blessing of the city's police commissioner Dolan, an old friend. Despite the Spirit's origin as detective/criminologist Denny Colt, his real identity was rarely referred to after his first appearance, and for all intents and purposes he was simply "The Spirit." The stories are presented in a wide variety of styles, from straight forward crime drama and noir to lighthearted adventure, from mystery and horror to comedy and love stories, often with hybrid elements that twisted genre and reader expectations. Quality Comics was an American comic book publishing company that operated from 1937 to 1956 and was largely influential in creating the Golden Age of comic books. From 1940-1950, printer Everett M. "Busy" Arnold reprinted Eisner's Spirit stories under his Quality Comics banner. Comic book stories from the 1940s and 1950s may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American culture. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While not representing the publisher's view of today's society, these stories are printed as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Hardcover (with Slipcase), 208 pages, full color. Cover price $62.99.
