Volume 1 - 1st printing. "September 1953 to September 1954!" Collects Ghostly Weird Stories (1953) #120-124. The great Jay Disbrow (who died just a few weeks ago on 2 May) featured memorably in this often overlooked and certainly unsung gem, appearing alongside the likes of L.B. Cole and EC stalwart Jack Kamen. Folks, this is an embarrassment of riches, truly it is. There are no slouches at all in these five comics. Hardcover (with Slipcase), 184 pages, full color. Cover price $54.99.

    Volume 1 - 1st printing. "May 1953 to January 1954!" Collects Mysteries (1953-1955) #1-5.

This one's a wacky entry and no denying, with Canadian publisher Superior Comics coming into the four-color horror ring all gloved up and swinging fit to punch the lights out of anybody who stands in their way. They kicked off with Journey Into Fear, Strange Mysteries (as opposed to pretty straightforward and perhaps even slightly boring mysteries), and the one-word extravaganza that was Mysteries, the latter calling itself variously Mysteries (its legal title) and, on the cover, Mysteries Weird and Strange.

The earlier tales were bizarre and quirky and it's pretty clear that inspiration was in short supply that day. Good stuff though, Clancy, with pens, pencils and plots coming from, among others, Jay Disbrow and the Igor Shop: clear a space on the shelf pronto.

    Hardcover, 184 pages, full color.

    Cover price $45.99.

    Volume 1 - 1st printing. "September/October 1951 to October/November 1952!" Collects Weird Adventures (1951 Ziff Davis) #10 and Weird Thrillers (1951) #1-5.

Sporting what must surely be one of the finest (albeit short) runs of painted covers, Ziff Davis's Weird Thrillers and the one-shot (numbered 10, go figure) Weird Adventures remain among the field's most overlooked entries. Following on from their hugely popular Harvey Horrors line, those lovable scamps at PS have added this wonderful and complete volume that - with the likes of Frank Giacola, Ross Andru, Sy Barry, Howard Nostrand, George Tuska, Alex Toth, Murphy Anderson and others - will have any self-respecting fan drooling.

St John's criminally overlooked Weird Horrors title from the early 1950's. with a cover style that's a riff on Marvel's later and much-loved Amazing Adult Fantasy, is this month's bona fide excitement! And believe me, you'll have to go a long way to match this first volume, with work from Gus Ricca, George Tuska, Charles Sultan, Bob Forgione, Enrico Bagnoli, Rafael Astarita, Paul Gattuso, Don Perlin and Albert Tyler many of whom are not household names though their styles deserve for them to be right up their with the very best.
