The Romance of Money (1937, 2nd printing with colored paper cover), illustrated by H.T. Elmo (a pseudonym for Jack Kirby), is promotional advertising comic booklet that was distributed by the National Savings Bank, Albany, New York. Elmo (Jack Kirby) is listed in the Who's Who of Comic and Cartoon Illustrators. Kirby's artwork here is similar in style to the famed Ripley's Believe It or Not series. The Romance of Money tells the story of money from the earliest barter systems to the sophisticated monetary systems we know today. The cover illustrates the famous story of George Washington throwing a silver dollar across the Rappanannock River. The word doller is derived from the Bohemian "thaler." "From thaler the word evolved to "daler" and then to our familiar dollar. 24 pages, black-and-white, 4-7/8-in. x 6-1/4-in.
