F.M. Howarth Original Comic Strip Art (c. Early 1900's)
Pre1950
A true pioneer in American cartooning, Howarth's signature style of figure work emphasizing large heads with expressive faces and pushing from single panel gags to a sequential format was an essential step in evolving the medium of comic strips and eventually comic books. Howarth's caricature-inspired skills are on fine display in this fun two-panel bit as a loving couple confront the dangers of the fainting couch. Pencil and ink on two sheets of heavy board, the first measures 14" x 8 3/4" and the second measures 14" x 10". Also included is a vintage envelope with "F.M. Howarth Set of 2" handwritten on one side.
