Auction Bidding

What bid amount should I enter?

To protect yourself from losing an item to another bidder even if you would have been willing to bid higher, we suggest that you enter the maximum amount that you'd be willing to pay for the item. The maximum bid that you enter will be kept hidden from other bidders for as long as you remain the high bidder. Other bidders will see the current bid for the item but will not know what your secret maximum bid is.

Our auctions use proxy bidding, which means that when you enter a secret maximum bid, your bid will be set to the minimum amount necessary to beat any other bids. If other bidders place bids after yours, the proxy bidding system will automatically increase your bid, up to the limit of your secret maximum bid, so that you remain the high bidder.

If you enter a bid but do not become the high bidder:
This means that the current high bidder has a secret maximum bid greater than or equal to the amount of your bid (in the case of a tie, the earlier bid wins). If you want the item, you will have to place a higher bid until you beat the other bidder's secret maximum.

If you are currently the high bidder:
You can change your secret maximum proxy bid at any time. To raise your secret maximum, just enter a new bid that is higher than your previous bid. Similarly, you can lower your secret maximum, but you cannot lower it below the current required bid.
