1st printing. By Santiago García and Bruce Campbell. For the first time in English, an essential history of the narrative art form's global rise. A noted comics artist himself, Santiago García follows the history of the graphic novel from early nineteenth-century European sequential art, through the development of newspaper strips in the United States, to the development of the twentieth-century comic book and its subsequent crisis. With such examples from around the world as Spain, France, Germany, and Japan, García illustrates how the graphic novel represents a new model for graphic narrative production that empowers authors and challenges longstanding social prejudices against comics. 1st printing. Story and art by Joseph D'Esposito. A secret history of comics, unearthed within the moving biography of legendary comic artist Bernard Krigstein. Take a walk with The Outsider. Comics in the 1950s is a nowhere medium for journeymen and artistically frustrated illustrators. Certainly thats what Bernie Krigstein —a comics artist and out-of-step painter slumming in the sleazy comics industry to make ends meet— thinks. What starts as an escape attempt from the rut of cranking out comics takes successive leaps into tales of labor organizing and fighting tenaciously to realize the artistic potential of the medium. The Outsider is both a birds-eye view of the comic book industry in the 1950s and an intimate portrait of one of its most militant artists. Joseph DEsposito explores the Jewish roots of comics and its lineage of Black, women, and other unsung participants (such as Matt Baker, a Black pioneer of the graphic novel). In the political hotbed of postwar America, the personal and the political weave vertiginously, culminating in Master Race, written by Al Feldstein and elevated into one of the few serious early comics works by Krigstein's formal innovations. The beating heart of Krigstein's journey is his wife, Natalie, a multifaceted character who grapples with competing roles as steadfast partner, postpartum mother, and ambitious writer. Other friends and foils include Stan Lee, Harvey Kurtzman, and Robert Kanigher. The Outsider is a story about dedication, frustration, ambition, anger, integrity —the 1950s comic book industry— all told in vivid, painterly strokes of melancholic blue. Softcover, 172 pages, B&W (and Blue). Mature Readers Cover price $25.00.

By Neil McGinness (with Contributions by Dan DiDio). Cover by George Rozen. Back Cover by Walter M. Baumhofer. Foreword by Frank Miller.
Pulp Power gives fans a rare glimpse into the pre-war pulp novel decade of the 1930s, a period of bold action and adventure storytelling that ultimately led to the creation of the comic book and the superheroes we know and love today.
In more than 500 novels written between 1930 and 1940, The Shadow, Doc Savage, and the Street & Smith universe of characters captivated a generation of Americans with their heroic exploits and inspired a new generation of writers to create a pantheon of comic book superheroes in their mold.
In Pulp Power, hundreds of these eye-catching covers are reproduced as a collection for the first time. Comics legend Dan DiDio provides context for the cover illustrations alongside a narrative discussion of the influence of the Street & Smith superhero universe on legendary creators such as Orson Welles, Truman Capote, Michael Chabon, George Lucas, Agnes Moorehead, James Patterson, Walter Mosley, Dwayne Johnson, Frank Miller, James Bama, Jim Steranko, Jim Lee, Gail Simone, and many more.

By Michael A Chaney.
Literary scholar Michael A. Chaney examines graphic novels to illustrate that in form and function they inform readers on how they ought to be read. His arguments result in an innovative analysis of the various knowledges that comics produce and the methods artists and writers employ to convey them. Theoretically eclectic, this study attends to the lessons taught by both the form and content of today's most celebrated graphic novels.

1st printing. Story and art by Steven Brower. The legacy of Grove Press is well known within literary circles - how Barney Rosset bought a fledgling but failing publishing company in the early 1950s and changed the world of letters in America, and perhaps the very culture as well; Grove Press brought to national prominence the writers, art, and artists of the avant-garde. Such groundbreaking works as Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, Last Exit to Brooklyn by Hubert Selby and Naked Lunch by William Burroughs represented a literary vanguard. Equally innovative, and ultimately as influential, Grove Press book covers reflected not only the work inside, but also the prevailing zeitgeist. The iconoclastic writing was echoed in the packaging, a marriage of imagery and the written word that had not been seen before, or, perhaps, since. The covers, the work of a young artist named Roy Kuhlman, who arrived on Grove's doorstep in 1951, contributed invaluably to the company's image as a distinguished and innovative publishing house. Before long, the inventive, two-and-three color covers featuring Kuhlmans abstract expressionist approach to design, set the tone for the next two decades, imitated but never equaled. His jazz-like improvisational paintings and graphics for Grove Press books in the 50s and 60s introduced an Abstract Expressionist style to graphic design. Work from all of Kuhlmans oeuvre is included in this handsome volume, over 300 in all, with an emphasis on the Grove covers. To date, the public has seen little of Kuhlmanss total creative output. It is all assembled here for the first time, displaying depth, variety, and innovation. It is at once illustrative, abstract, conceptual, comical, serious and revolutionary. ROY KUHLMAN: Reluctant Modernist is a celebration of and a tribute to this important designers creative métier. It is the very definition of avant-garde. Softcover, 9-in.x 12-in., 312 pages, full color. Mature Readers Cover price $45.00.

1st printing. By Mark Brake. Super-hero fiction has been with us for almost a century; high-octane tales crammed with concepts and contrasting themes, from superpowers and the post-human, to masked vigilantes and immortality. In that time, superwomen have evolved from comic book caricatures (created by men, for men) to stronger representations of female power. THE SCIENCE OF SUPERWOMEN looks at this evolution, from its hypersexualized origins to today's more nuanced diversity, and explores the relationship between superhero film and fiction and the underlying science of our ever-evolving universe. 1982: Seismic changes were in the air… New Wave music ruled the airwaves, Spielbergs E.T. dazzled at the box office, and the term internet was first used to describe the new international network of communication. The comic-book industry was also experiencing great change as ambitious young self-publishers started beating the drum of revolution in a long-stagnant field. Among them was Dave Sim with his creation Cerebus the Aardvark, which was rapidly growing in popularity to the point that copies of the first issue had risen from $1 to hundreds of dollars in just five short years.
December 1977: Dave Sim and his soon to be wife, Deni Loubert, printed two-thousand copies of Cerebus No. 1, and distributed them to Now & Then Books in Kitchener, Ontario, Big Rapids Distribution in Lansing, Michigan, and Sea Gat Distribution in Brooklyn, New York, establishing a clear trail of where nearly every copy went.
April 1982: Ten copies of Cerebus No. 1 were found at a flea market and sold to a comic book shop. Then twenty more were sold to the shop down the road… Then thirty more… Forty more… In all, nearly two thousand newly discovered copies of this rare and sought after book were sold to comic shops from Berkeley, California to New York City. Every single one – counterfeit.
This is the Secret History of the Counterfeit Cerebus No. 1.
