The Funnies presented reprints of classic comic strips, including Roy Crane's influential Captain Easy, alongside original material. Tars Tarkas faces a duel to the death with the Jeddak of Thark, in the official comic-strip adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars. If he wins, he can rule the Tharks and help John Carter free Dejah Thoris, but if a poisoned blade touches him, it's over. John Carter art by John Coleman Burroughs, son of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Phantasmo, the first true superhero in the Dell pantheon, makes his debut after Phil Anson returns from years of study in the Orient. With the ability to leave his body, he becomes Phantasmo, sort of a cross between the Spectre and Doctor Strange.
