1st printing. By Robert Williams. Fantagraphics had a huge hit with the 1998 release of Malicious Resplendence, the ultimate collection of Robert Williams's paintings, which we're following up four years later with this equally overwhelming collection of Williams's comix and drawings. Included in this deluxe collection are all of Williams' contributions to such legendary underground anthologies as ZAP, Snatch, Arcade, Cocaine Comix, and more (much of which has been out-of-print for over 25 years). Also, the book will feature scores of never-before-published works, including the never-before-seen, full-color storyboards for a proposed animated ZAP movie, along with numerous cartoons from Williams' early years at L.A. City College. Plus, the seminal Coochy Cooty Men's Comics, dozens of examples of hot rod art done for Ed "Big Daddy" Roth's studio, and the rare, two-color strip "Yama Yama." The book features two introductions, one by Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers creator and fellow ZAP cohort, Gilbert Shelton, and the other by Williams himself, contextualizing his comix work within his better-known career as a painter. Softcover, 9 1/2-in. x 12-in., 288 pages, PC/PB&W. MATURE READERS Cover price $29.95.

This issue marks the beginning of a new format for Illustration. At 100 pages, perfect- bound and printed in full color, this new format more closely resembles a quality art book than a magazine. Ushering in our new era is a special issue-long profile on one of the most important and prolific illustrators of the late-20th century, Robert Peak. Peak completely revolutionized advertising in the film industry in the 1960s, and transformed the approach to movie advertising from basic collages of film stills or head shots to flamboyant artistic illustrations. His innovative poster design for West Side Story in 1961 ? painting characters and scenes into a single montage ? became the first of over 100 such posters, among them My Fair Lady, Camelot, Rollerball, Star Trek, Superman, and Apocalypse Now and earned Peak the title "Father of the Modern Movie Poster." Peak's 45 covers for Time Magazine (most notably the portrait of Mother Teresa), and numerous other commercial assignments redefined the look of illustration in the '60s and '70s, and influenced contemporary illustrators more than anyone since J.C. Leyendecker or Al Parker. No other book on Peak exists in print today, and this volume is essential for the library of any serious student of contemporary illustration art.
