Volume 58 - 2nd and later printings. "The Landsknechts!" Written by Douglas Miller. Art by Gerry Embleton. The Landsknechts were German mercenaries who served during the reigns of Maximilian I and Charles V in the sixteenth century. Having signed up, these Landsknechts were read a very detailed code of conduct, organised into companies, paid one month in advance, and sent into battle! Their major weapon was the pike, which could be up to 18 feet in length, but those whose duty it was to advance in the front line carried instead the fearsome Zweihänder; an enormous battle-sword around 66 inches in length! Douglas Miller describes in detail the organisation, tactics, weapons, uniforms and history of these remarkable soldiers. Softcover, 48 pages, PC/PB&W.

Volume 148 - 1st printing. "The Army of Alexander the Great!" Written by Nicholas Sekunda. Art by Angus McBride. When Philip II ascended the throne in 359 BC, Macedonia was in danger of being engulfed by wild barbarian tribes to the north and wily Greek cities to the south. Philip had to expand the power of the throne or be swallowed up: the creation of a powerful army was imperative. When his son, Alexander, inherited his kingdom at the age of 20, he also inherited an army which was truly unrivalled. The Macedonians were veterans of battle, well equipped and eager for conquest. Add to this Alexander's supreme gifts as military commander and it is little wonder they achieved so much.Men-at-Arms 148 and Campaign 7 are also available in a single volume special edition as ‘Alexander the Great'. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 154 - 2nd and later printings. "Arthur and the Anglo-Saxon Wars!" Written by David Nicolle. Art by Angus McBride. The Arthurian Age; the Celtic Twilight; the Dark Ages; the Birth of England; these are the powerfully romantic names often given to one of the most confused yet vital periods in British history. It is an era upon which rival Celtic and English nationalisms frequently fought. It was also a period of settlement, and of the sword. This absorbing volume by David Nicolle transports us to an England shrouded in mystery and beset by savage conflict, a land which played host to one of the most enduring figures of our history – Arthur. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 173 - 1st printing. "The Alamo and the War of Texan Independence 1835–36!" Written by Philip Haythornthwaite. Art by Paul Hannon. In 1823 Texas was opened to American settlement; over the next 12 years thousands took advantage of the opportunity. During this time the corrupt Santa Anna rose to power. A dishonest and ruthless politician, thief, compulsive gambler, opium addict and liar, he nevetheless gained a measure of popular support and set about destroying federalism. Conflict with the American settlers ('Texians') became inevitable, a conflict which included the legendary Battle of the Alamo. Philip Haythornwaite covers the story of the War of Texan Independence in a volume backed by a wealth of illustrations and photographs, including eight full page colour plates by Paul Hannon. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 221 -2nd and later printings. "Central American Wars 1959–89!" Written by Carlos Caballero Jurado. Art by Simon McCouaig. Once predicted to be 'the Middle East of the Year 2000', Central America and the Caribbean have long been a powder keg of revolutionary activity and guerilla warfare. The United States, with important strategic and economic interests in the region, has traditionally opted for a military solution toward the political upheaval, developing a range of responses, from direct military intervention to the training of tens of thousands of Latin-American soldiers in anti-guerilla warfare techniques. This text, enhanced by colour plates and numerous photographs, examines the history of the Central American Wars by country, detailing the organization and uniforms of the combatants. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

  • Issue #335-1ST
    Osprey Men-at-Arms Series SC (1973-2011 OSPREY) 335-1ST

Volume 335 - 1st printing. "Émigré and Foreign Troops in British Service (2)!" Written by René Chartrand. Art by Patrice Courcelle. Following his study of the astonishing range of French Royalist and foreign mercenary units employed by Britain in the period 1793–1802 (Men-at-Arms 328), the author describes - often for the first time in an English language publication - the part played by their successors during the crucial years of the Napoleonic Wars. He covers not only relatively well-recorded units, such as Roll's, Meuron's and Watteville's Swiss corps, but also the unjustly neglected Italians, Corsicans and Greeks, and such exotica as the African and Ceylon regiments. Uniform details of nearly 40 corps are based on impressive primary research, and this book and its companion volume make a genuinely new contribution to Napoleonic studies. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

  • Issue #382-1ST

This item is not in stock at MyComicShop. If you use the "Add to want list" tab to add this issue to your want list, we will email you when it becomes available.

Volume 382 - 1st printing. "Wellington's Peninsula Regiments (1)!" Written by Mike Chappell. Art by Mike Chappell. The forces which Wellington led in Portugal and Spain and up into southern France between 1808 and 1814 achieved a consistent record of victory perhaps unmatched in the history of the British Army. Some 40 per cent of this volunteer army were Irishmen – a remarkable figure, given the recent unrest and bloodshed in Ireland. This book details the record, and illustrates the uniforms and equipment, of the two cavalry and three infantry units boasting formal Irish identity: the 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards, 18th Hussars, 27th (Enniskillen), 87th (Prince of Wales's Own Irish), and 88th (Connaught Rangers) Regiments of Foot. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

  • Issue #397-1ST

Volume 397 - 1st printing. "The Austro-Hungarian Forces in World War I (2)!" Written by Peter Jung. Art by Darko Pavlovic. The part played in the Great War by the armies of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy is little known to English-speakers, perhaps because 1918 saw the complete destruction of the Empire. Yet it was of great importance, providing nearly all Central Powers forces on the Italian front, huge numbers on the Russian front, the Balkans and even a contingent in Turkey and Palestine. This second volume describes this complex organisation from the accession of Emperor Karl I in November 1916, through the victory of Caporetto and failure of the Piave offensive, to the final Armistice. The text is supported by tables and insignia charts, and illustrated with rare photographs and colourful plates. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 87- 1st printing. "Italian Arditi!" Written by Angelo Pirocchi . Art by Velimir Vuksic. The Italian Reparti d'Assalto (Assault Units) of World War I were a truly elite force. The word ardito (pl. arditi) means bold or daring, and, as their name suggests, their role required courage, as well as specific combat skills. This book takes a close look at the origins, training, dress, weaponry and equipment of the Arditi, and examines the daily life, motivation and combat role of these elite soldiers. The legacy of their identity is also examined, in the presence of D'Annunzio and rise to power of Mussolini in post-war Italy. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

  • Issue #1
    OSS in WW 2 (2002) 1

Operation Dragoon - Story and Art by Ron Ledwell. The debut issue of this new series focuses on the exciting exploits of the legendary Office of Strategic Services (O.S.S.), during the Second World War. This top-secret American military force was the predecessor for the CIA and for elite special operations units like the modern day Navy Seals and Army Rangers. O.S.S. forces engaged in hair-raisingly dangerous campaigns against the Nazi and Axis forces; often going in before the regular military units to scout the front, to glean vital intelligence, and to cripple the enemy defenses with sabotage. If you like stories of espionage and daring-do behind-the-lines World War II action, then this is the comic for you! 28 pages, B&W. Cover price $3.75.
