    • Original Painted Art from Uncle Sam #2 (1997 DC/Vertigo), Page 10 by Alex Ross. A fever dream of Americana that sends the embodiment of the American Spirit on a dizzying journey through our country's past and present, Alex Ross and Steve Darnall's Uncle Sam is a harrowing examination of the legacy of America in all its splendor and horror. While the story itself is certainly impactful, it's Ross' art that truly brings the story home. His hyper-realistic style, typically used to bring iconic superheroes to breathtaking life, is used here to personify national iconography and history making the abstract concepts into humans who embody the good, the bad, and the ugly of our shared history. On this page, Sam is approached by Britannia and her British Lion, offering the commiseration that only she can to her successor in Empire, before telling him of Marine Commander General Smedley Butler and his military exploits as "The Gangster of Capitalism". Ross punctuates this anecdote with a beautiful widescreen final panel of American marines storming a beach. Signed by Ross in the bottom panel. Pencil and paint on heavy art board. 13 3/4" x 20 1/4", full color.
