"Origin of the Tatterdemalion," script by Bob Kanigher, pencils by Joe Kubert (layouts) and Redondo Studio, inks by Redondo Studio; A shadowy figure hands a little girl a ball, and asks her to toss it to the man pulling up in the red convertible; The ball bounces into the convertible and explodes; The driver, Dill Dixon, dies in the explosion; The little girl lies severely injured in the street; Fleeing the scene are two hoods, who go by the names Vorst and Anders; As they cut through an alley, Vorst is spooked by a rustling sound, and fires three shots from his revolver; The two men ascend a fire escape ladder to a nearby rooftop; Behind them, stepping out from the shadows, is the Ragman, who has taken a bullet to the shoulder; Despite his injury, the Ragman pursues the two killers. "75-25 or Die," script by Robert Kanigher, pencils by Joe Kubert (layouts) and Redondo Studio, inks by Redondo Studio; Two kidnappers, Kinky and Lukas, are pursued by the police, for running a red light; Stopping the car, Kinky steps out with a woman; As the police approach, Kinky demands they drop their weapons, or else he will murder the woman; Lukas guns the engine, and runs over them with the car; Kinky muscles the woman back towards the car; Suddenly, Ragman drops down onto the hood; Panicking, Lucas hits the accelerator, and begins wildly weaving down the street; Kinky fires on Ragman, but his errant bullet instead hits Lukas, killing him; The car careens out of control, slamming into a pile of scrap metal before bursting into flames; Ragman is forcibly thrown to the ground. Once discovered, the gangsters pursue the boy, who finds protection behind the tattered cloak of the Ragman. The trio of hoods are beaten into unconsciousness by Ragman. By the time they recover, the Ragman and the boy are long gone. The boy pantomimes the series of events that led up to his pursuit from the gangsters. Ragman takes the boy, and his cat, to the Rags 'N' Tatters pawn shop, which he operates in his civilian identity, Rory Regan.
