Written by Chris Claremont. Art and cover by Bob McLeod.

Featuring the Origin and 1st appearance of New Mutants.

Thinking that the X-Men are dead (they are actually only off in space facing the Brood), Moira convinces Professor Xavier to gather the next generation of mutants after she rescues a local girl who can turn into a wolf; Professor X begins contacting the kids only to find that the young mutants are being attacked by Hellfire Soldiers sent by Donald Pierce to kill them. Arriving in Kentucky, Xavier and Rahne are attacked by the rocket blasting Sam Guthrie who has been duped into working for Pierce and Professor X is captured. The young mutants band together to save Xavier before Pierce can suck his mind dry.

Returning to the mansion after the conflict, Professor X gives his new young charges uniforms and, once the penitent Sam comes calling and is accepted into their ranks, the roster is filled and the New Mutants are born.

One of the best visual storytellers in comics, Matt Wagner turns in a beautiful page for the inciting event for his creation's second crossover with the Dark Knight! The Gotham City Museum is hosting an exhibit dedicated to the many villains who have plagued the city over the decades and the centerpiece is the skull of Hunter Rose, the original Grendel. With mobs of protestors gathered outside, Commissioner Gordon and the GCPD are out to keep the peace- though they might need some assistance if say, an enhanced assassin from the future chooses this moment and place to travel back in time! Coinciding with Batgirl's big screen debut in Batman & Robin, this one shot took place early in Barbara's career and told the story of her first encounter with the Joker- which has gone horrifyingly awry. After accidentally killing a thug attempting to take a family hostage and being knocked out by the Joker, Batgirl attempts to lead the only other survivor of the attack to safety. Original Art from Detective Comics #417 (1971) Page 30 Pencils and Inks by Don Heck

A beautifully drawn page that also happens to be a crucial moment in Bat-lore from the great Don Heck! After Batgirl aids an overwhelmed Commissioner Gordon in taking down a group of cop-killing radicals (who were themselves being set up by the mob!), all that's left is for the two definitely-not-related crimefighters to head home. Heck's inking is outstanding here, especially in the close shot of Gordon's face in the the third panel. The most notable thing about this page however is that it reveals that Gordon, through some deductive reasoning worthy of the Dark Knight, has known for a while now that his daughter is Batgirl. Pencil and ink on art board. 10 1/2" x 16".

After a sleazy paparazzo snaps some pictures of a topless She-Hulk on the roof of the Baxter Building, a chase ensues in the skies over New York, which Byrne and Gordon depict beautifully with some outstanding panels- especially the second and fourth! As exciting as Flash's speedy exploits are, the drama in Wally and Linda's relationship could be just as thrilling as evidenced by this great 'drama' page that finds the pair talking things out after it's revealed that the story Linda was investigating (and the imminent monster attack) involved an ex-husband that she never told Wally about. "He's the greatest guy and the biggest jerk I've ever known", a line from Black Canary that perfectly sums up her relationship with the recently deceased Oliver Queen as she receives the news of his death from Connor Hawke- along with the surprise that Connor is Ollie's son. It's a downbeat, heavy moment but this was the 90's and so it's punctuated with some beautifully drawn, sharply inked cheesecake! Signed by Damaggio in top margin. A dramatic opening to this issue, part of Ollie's last arc (for a while, anyway) before his shocking death!
