Controversial parody discontinued due to Disney lawsuit. The Air Pirates were a group of cartoonists who created two issues of an underground comic called Air Pirates Funnies in 1971, leading to a famous lawsuit by The Walt Disney Company. Founded by Dan O'Neill, the group also included Shary Flenniken, Bobby London, Gary Hallgren, and Ted Richards. The collective shared a common interest in the styles of past masters of the comic strip: Flenniken emulated George McManus's Bringing Up Father in her Trots and Bonnie comics, London's strip Dirty Duck paid homage to the styles of E.C. Segar's Thimble Theater and George Herriman's Krazy Kat, and Richards' Dopin' Dan was similar to Mort Walker's Beetle Bailey. The original Air Pirates were a gang of Mickey Mouse antagonists of the 1930s; O'Neill regarded Mickey Mouse as a symbol of conformist hypocrisy in American culture, and therefore a ripe target for satire. The first issue of Air Pirates Funnies was dated July 1971, and the second issue dated August. Both were published under the Hell Comics imprint, and were distributed through Ron Turner's Last Gasp publishing company. The lead stories in both issues, created by O'Neill and Hallgren, focused on Walt Disney characters, most notably from Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse newspaper strip, with the Disney characters engaging in adult behaviors such as sex and drug consumption. O'Neill insisted it would dilute the parody to change the names of the characters, so his adventurous mouse character was called "Mickey" Cover price $0.50.

Not approved by the Comics Code Authority (see notes). "And Now, the Goblin!" Part 1 of 3. Script by Stan Lee. Pencils by Gil Kane. Inks by John Romita. Cover by Gil Kane. With Gwen Stacy still in London, Peter Parker gains a new admirer: Mary Jane Watson. Oh boy. How will MaryJane's sudden interest in Peter affect Harry Osborn? Unfortunately, the short answer is not well. Since Harry is secretly battling a drug addiction. Nevertheless, when Mary Jane makes her off-Broadway debut at a local theater; Peter and Harry attend the show to support her. Interestingly, Norman Osborn also attends the musical. In part because he used to own the building that now houses the theater. During the show Norman fixates on a certain door -- possibly a storage room door -- just off the main hallway. And Peter notices it too. After the show the web-slinger returns to the theater...and discovers his worst nightmare in the flesh: the Green Goblin! Wow! Cameo appearances by Joe Robertson and Randy Robertson. (Notes: This three-part story was not approved by the CCA due to the (anti)drug-themed story. At this time the code did not permit drugs to be mentioned in any fashion. However, Stan Lee published the story anyway, and it led to major revisions in the code -- allowing anti-drug stories and horror stories including ones about vampires. The Green Goblin previously appeared in the Spectacular Spider-Man Magazine (1966) #2. Marie Severin provided the layout for the cover. This issue was reprinted in Marvel Tales #77.) 36 pages. Written and illustrated by Jim Steranko, based on a concept by Byron Preiss. Desperate for a way to reach inner-city students about the dangers of drug abuse and gang activity in a way that would connect with them, teacher Byron Preiss reached out to Jim Steranko in 1970 (inspired by his storytelling in the Nick Fury comic series) with an idea and a pro-bono proposal. Believing in the cause, and in comics' ability to be an impactful format, Steranko accepted the work, and within a year, The Block's first print run was released to schools in Philadelphia, accompanied by a worksheet for teachers to guide student dialogue (not included with any copies offered unless otherwise noted).

Later reprinted as a featured piece in Comixscene (1972) #4, this oversized newspaper-insert style was an educator's response to the burgeoning drug culture of the day. The number of print runs/distribution locations is unknown. 8 pages, approx. 11" x 17", B&W, newsprint.
