Lil Abner Playbill For The St. James Theatre (1957). By the mid-fifties, Al Capp's newspaper strip was a part of American consciousness. Li'l Abner had been celebrated on magazine covers, a feature film, comic books, a series of theatrical cartoons and more merchandise than you could shake a Shmoo at. Still, an area that especially interested Capp remained unconquered: the Broadway stage. All that changed the night of November 15, 1956 when the musical version of Li'l Abner opened at the St. James Theater. 24 pages, B&W, 6.5-in. x 9-in.
