Cover by Bill Holman. Stories and art by Bill Holman. Dell's Large Feature Comic reprinted classic comic strips. This issue reprints one-panel domestic-comedy gag strips from Bill Holman, the legendary cartoonist behind Smoky Stover. Even this strip is not safe from his running "foo" gag that populated every Smoky Stover strip. A man buys a catfish for his fishbowl, to "keep the mice in their place." A skydiver comes in to complain about a defective parachute. A husband buys boxing gloves for his wife to use as potholders. 8 1/2-in. x 11 1/2-in, 48 pages, B&W.

Story by Carl Barks, Jack Hannah, and Nick George. Art by Bruce Bushman. Pluto Saves the Ship. This issue of Dell's Large Feature Comic is significant for several reasons. It is one of the first American Disney comic books that was not composed of material reprinted from newspaper comic strips. It is Pluto's first comic book. And it represents the first comics work of future Disney comics legend Carl Barks. Barks contributed to the story for this issue (not the art), based on two Pluto cartoons that Barks worked on at Disney studios, Bone Trouble (1940) and The Army Mascot (1942). The art is by Disney animation layout artist Bruce Bushman. The WWII-era story has Pluto encountering Nazi saboteurs on a Navy cruiser. 8 1/2-in. x 11 1/2-in, 48 pages, B&W. Cover price $0.10.

Cover by Clyde Lewis. Stories and art by Clyde Lewis. Dell's Large Feature Comic reprinted classic comic strips. This issue reprints the military strip Private Buck by Clyde Lewis. The hapless, childlike but cheerful Pvt. Buck (a play on "buck private") delivers military-themed humor, such as the uniform that fits Private Buck like a tent. Buck launches a campaign against the camp cook. Buck confuses a mine with a bowling ball. One-panel gags provide slices of life in uniform during the 1940s; most of these strips predate the US entry into WWII. 8 1/2-in. x 11 1/2-in, 48 pages, B&W. Cover price $0.10.

Red Ryder's Victory Patrol kit was free by sending in this postcard which was enclosed in loaves of Langendorf Bread between the years 1942 and 1944. The Victory Patrol kit consisted of a 32-pages comic by Fred Harmon, a secret decoder, secret handshake and secret greeting, a map of where Red Ryder lives. The postcard is extremely rare, given its age and the fact it was either tossed or used. 5 3/8-in. x 3 1/2-in. and is printed in dark blue ink on thin cardstock.
