This issue features the debut comic-strip adventures of Tarzan (by future Prince Valiant artist Hal Foster), Al Capp's Li'l Abner, and Raeburn Van Buren's Abbie and Slats. In the latter, country spinster Abbie meets her orphaned cousin Aubrey for the first time. She knows he's a city boy, but she's not prepared for the rough-and-tumble teen who calls himself "Slats." Shipwrecked on the African coast, the infant son of Lord Greystoke is raised by great apes to become Tarzan. Plus an illustrated biography of screen legend James Cagney. Cover by Mo Leff. Stories and art by Mo Leff. United's anthology series presented a different comic-strip character in every issue. This issue features the classic fantasy strip Peter Pat by Mo Leff, and the "topper" strip Percy Penguin. Peter Pat is transported to the magical Pagoland, where he has Little Nemo-like fanciful adventures. The strip, narrated in captions like Prince Valiant, was the first official solo work of Mo Leff, a former assistant to Al Capp and Ham Fisher. The weekly strip only lasted a year, so this probably collects the entire run. Human foibles are illustrated by members of the animal kingdom, in the sardonic Percy Penguin.
