This book traces the rise of the Science Fiction genre - From early fiction and its accompanying illustrations to the sophistication of the cinematic imagines of today. Every area is considered, including films, comics and pulp magazines. The author goes into great detail on sci-fi stories themselves, decade by decade. From pre-19th century through the Victorian age and the period of technological expansion in the 1930's and 1940's to the space race when fiction became fact after mankind landed on the moon.

Fireside Book Series - 1st printing. Collects Amazing Spider-Man (1963-1998 1st Series) #42-43, #82, and #96-98. Written by Stan Lee. Art by John Romita Sr. and Gil Kane. Cover by Bob Larkin. This volume in the amazing Marvel/Simon Schuster Fireside series (Origins of Marvel Comics TPB, Son of Origins TPB, Bring on the Bad Guys TPB) collects the 1st full appearance of Mary Jane Watson, features the villainy of Electro, Rhino, and the Green Goblin, and guest appearances by Foggy Nelson (from Daredevil) and Dr. Curt Connors (the Lizard). Also included is the critically acclaimed 3-part story where one of Peter Parker's closest friends struggles with drug addiction. This is a significant story in the history of Marvel Comics for at the time of its release these issues (#96-98) were not approved by the Comics Code Authority because of the (anti-)drug themed story. (Not that the Comics Code was pro-drug, of course. It's just that at this time, comics couldn't mention drugs at all, even negatively). Hardcover, 130 pages, full cover. Cover price $11.95.
