Loosely based on Shakespeare's The Tempest, MGM's lavishly produced Forbidden Planet (1956) is a true sci-fi classic, influencing countless other works, including Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Starring Leslie Nielson as Commander J.J. Adams and Anne Francis as the daughter of Dr. Morbius, the film made a star of Robby the Robot, who is featured on the cover of the first installment of this official comic book adaptation. The issue ends with the introduction of Altaira. She doesn't look much like Anne Francis, but the art as a whole is very nice. Smokey gives an exploding cigar to a friend and it makes the round until it comes back to him. Fiddling Finnegan practices his awful fiddling at Smokey's firehouse. Smokey's son is supposed to practice the violin, but rigs it up with a clock's pendulum. Smokey decides to go to Texas for a vacation because it's all downhill on the map. Cookie bakes the Chief a birthday cake, but the only "candle" Smokey can find turns out to be a firecracker.
