  • Issue #89A
Comic Book Marketplace (1991 Gemstone) 89A

Special issue featuring legendary Prince Valiant creator HAL FOSTER and Liberty Meadows creator FRANK CHO! Comic Book Marketplace #89 features a major article on the life and career of HAL FOSTER, artist on Tarzan (1931-37) and Prince Valiant (1937-1980). Despite his standing as one of the pre-eminent comic strip artists of all time, no complete, well- researched biographies have been written about Foster. Now, author Brian Kane has written what will surely become the major reference work on his life and career in a new book from Vanguard Press. The book is due to hit this fall, and CBM #89 will contain a review of the book by Russ Cochran along with photos and excerpts from the book. What makes hot young artist FRANK CHO so popular with comic strip veterans like AL WILLIAMSON? His daily and Sunday Liberty Meadows strips (and their comic book counterpart) have regularly poked fun at classic comic strips (Peanuts, Cathy, Tarzan, and others, including Prince Valiant), but the established masters of the form seem to love him. What's behind the pop culture machine that is Frank Cho? Find out about that, the success of his recent coffee table books, and the final fate of Liberty Meadows in Comic Book Marketplace #89! Born on a train going from Kansas City to Hollywood, his name was Mickey Mouse. Soon, his immense popularity at the Box Office led to a starring role in the daily comic strips, and then to the color Sunday sections. Mickey Mouse magazines and Big Little Books, wristwatches, Lionel train cars, and countless other commercial endorsements followed. He finally got his own regular comic book series with Walt Disney's Comics and Stories and Dell one-shots. As other genres of comics came and went, the popularity of Mickey, Donal Duck, and the other Disney characters remained strong with comic book readers.
