    1st printing.

    By Grant Geissman.

In 1947, Bill Gaines inherited EC Comics, a new venture founded by his legendary father M. C. Gaines. Over the next eight years, Bill Gaines and a "who's who" of the era including Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, and Wally Wood would reinvent the very notion of the comic book with titles like Tales from the Crypt, Crime SuspenStories, Weird Science, and MAD.

EC delighted in publishing gory, morbid horror and crime comics, but they also pioneered true-to-life war comics, "real" science-fiction stories, and a series of tales about then-taboo subjects as racism, bigotry, vigilantism, drug addiction, police corruption, and anti-Semitism. Too good to last, they were eventually caught up by various 1950s guardians of morality, who were convinced that EC's often over-the-top content was causing juvenile delinquency.

TASCHEN presents the full, fascinating story of this fabled company, written and designed by EC-expert Grant Geissman. Even the most die-hard EC Fan-Addicts will find something new within these pages. Gathering more than 1,000 illustrations that include the rarest and most notorious covers, interior pages and panels, photos, vintage original artwork, and some of the most celebrated stories ever to be printed, this is the ultimate EC Comics compendium!

    Hardcover, 12-in. x 16-in., 592 pages, full color.

    Cover price $200.00.

20th Anniversary Edition - 1st printing. By Mark James Estren. In the land that time forgot, 1960s and 1970s America, there once were some bold, forthright, thoroughly unashamed social commentators who said things that "couldn't be said" and showed things that "couldn't be shown." They were cartoonists - underground cartoonists. And they were some of the cleverest, most interesting social commentators of their time, as well as some of the very best artists, whose work has influenced the visual arts right up until today. A History of Underground Comics is their story - told in their own art, in their own words, with connecting commentary and analysis by one of the very few media people who took them seriously from the start. oftcover, 8-in. x 11-in., 320 pages, B&W. Cover price $29.95.

Volume 1 - 1st printing. "From Prehistory to the Renaissance!"

Written by Marion Augustin. Art and cover by Bruno Heitz. Translated by George L. Newman.

As two kids give their grandpa a tour of Paris, he starts an interesting conversation with them-about where all the art they see in their lives-from the movie house to the stadiums to museums and even the subway-started. His impromptu history lesson goes back to the first Cavemen drawings to the pyramids of Giza, and by the end of the book includes Greco-Roman feats of ingenuity and the frescoes of the Renaissance.

Recounted as a narrative about why different civilizations created different kinds of art, centuries of art history are explored entertainingly for young readers. Iconic works, such as Donatello's David and The Book of Kells, are included as well as architectural feats like the Colosseum.

    Softcover, 8 1/2-in. x 11-in., 128 pages, full color.

    Cover price $12.99.

This item is not in stock at MyComicShop. If you use the "Add to want list" tab to add this issue to your want list, we will email you when it becomes available.

1st printing. Horror comics have been a part of the fabric of the industry since the Golden Age of the 1940s. William Schoell examines the evolution of the genre from the Golden Age, through the Silver Age in the 1960, up until the end of the Bronze Age in the early 1980s. Included are the earliest series, like American Comics Group's Adventures into the Unknown and Prize Comics' Frankenstein, and the controversial and gory comics of the '50s, such as EC's infamous and influential Tales from the Crypt. The explosion of horror titles following the relaxation of the comics code in the '70s is fully documented with chapters on Marvel's prodigious output, DC's anthologies and titles such as Swamp Thing, as well as the notable contributions of firms like Gold Key and Atlas. This book examines how horror comics exploited everyday terrors, and often reflected societal attitudes toward women and people who were different. Softcover, 288 pages, Text (with B&W Chapter Illustrations and photos).
