1st printing. Howard Nostrand's brilliant horror-comics art was done during the height of the criticism against comics that resulted in government investigations and the Comics Code. Nostrand's style was an incredibly skilled, perfect mash-up of the EC artists Wally Wood and Jack Davis. Nostrand could be as innovative as Will Eisner, another influence on the artist. Five stories will be painstakingly reproduced from the rare original art! WARNING: Not for the squeamish-as you can see from the cover Nostrand's gore could be over the top-we can't show you the insides here to protect the Diamond Previews family-friendly content. Hardcover, 148 pages, full color. Cover price $24.99.

1st printing. By Jack Cole. Jack Cole is widely acclaimed for his brilliant work on his creation, the superhero Plastic Man. But he didn't just stretch people's imaginations, he also frightened them out of their wits! Cole's comics in this genre were some of the most grisly, horrifyingly gut-wrenching art and stories in the history of comics! In Jack Cole's Deadly Horror you'll read comic stories from the 1950s with titles like "Orgy of Death," "Hangman's Horror," "The Corpse That Wouldn't Die," "A Pact With The Devil," and many more spine-tingling tales. Introduced by Eisner Award winning comics historian Craig Yoe with rare art and background material. This large format full color book is part of the acclaimed Chilling Archives of Horror Comics, which includes Dick Briefer's Frankenstein, Bob Powell's Terror, and Zombies! Hardcover, 148 pages, full color. Cover price $24.99.

1st printing. Of the myriad genres comic books ventured into during its golden age, none was as controversial as or came at a greater cost than horror; the public outrage it incited almost destroyed the entire industry. Yet before the watchdog groups and Congress could intercede, horror books were flying off the newsstands. During its peak period (1951-54) over fifty titles appeared each month. Apparently there was something perversely irresistible about these graphic excursions into our dark side, and Four Color Fear collects the finest of these into a single robust and affordable volume. EC is the comic book company most fans associate with horror; its complete line has been reprinted numerous times, and deservedly so. But to the average reader there remain unseen quite a batch of genuinely disturbing, compulsive, imaginative, at times even touching, horror stories presented from a variety of visions and perspectives, many of which at their best can stand toe to toe with EC. All of the better horror companies are represented: Ajax-Farrell, Atlas, Avon, Charlton, Comic Media, Fawcett, Fiction House, Gilmor, Harvey, Quality, Standard, St. John, Story, Superior, Trojan, and Youthful. Artist perennials Jack Cole, Steve Ditko, George Evans, Frank Frazetta, Alex Toth, Al Williamson, Basil Wolverton, and Wallace Wood contribute both stories and covers, with many of the forty full-sized covers created by specialists Bernard Baily, L.B. Cole, William Eckgren, and Matt Fox. Editors Benson and Sadowski have sifted through hundreds of rare books to cherry-pick the most compelling scripts and art, and they provide extensive background notes on the artists, writers, and companies involved in their creation. Digital restoration has been performed with subtlety and restraint, mainly to correct registration and printing errors, with every effort made to retain the flavor of the original comics, and to provide the reader the experience of finding in the attic a bound volume of the finest non-EC horror covers and stories of the pre-code era. Softcover, 304 pages, full color. Cover price $29.99.

1st printing. Horror comics have been a part of the fabric of the industry since the Golden Age of the 1940s. William Schoell examines the evolution of the genre from the Golden Age, through the Silver Age in the 1960, up until the end of the Bronze Age in the early 1980s. Included are the earliest series, like American Comics Group's Adventures into the Unknown and Prize Comics' Frankenstein, and the controversial and gory comics of the '50s, such as EC's infamous and influential Tales from the Crypt. The explosion of horror titles following the relaxation of the comics code in the '70s is fully documented with chapters on Marvel's prodigious output, DC's anthologies and titles such as Swamp Thing, as well as the notable contributions of firms like Gold Key and Atlas. This book examines how horror comics exploited everyday terrors, and often reflected societal attitudes toward women and people who were different. Softcover, 288 pages, Text (with B&W Chapter Illustrations and photos).

1st printing. Edited by Richard J. Arndt. Foreword by Stephen J. Bissette. In 1954, the comic book industry instituted the Comics Code, a set of self-regulatory guidelines that effectively banned genuine horror coimcs. Because the Code applied only to color comics, many artists and writers turned to black and white to circumvent the Code's confines. With the 1964 publication of Creepy #1 by Warren Publishing, black-and-white horror comics experienced a revival that continued into the early 21st century. This work offers a comprehensive history and retrospective of the black-and-white horror coimcs that flourished on the newsstands from 1964 to 2004. Softcover, 7-in. x 10-in., 164 pages, Text (with B&W Illustrations and Photos). Cover price $55.00.

1st printing. Rising from the depths of history comes an all-new examination of the 20th Century's best horror comics, written by Peter Normanton (editor of From The Tomb, the UK's preeminent magazine on the genre). From the pulps and seminal horror comics of the 1940s, through ones they tried to ban in the 1950s, this tome explores how the genre survived the introduction of the Comics Code, before making its terrifying return during the 1960s and 1970s. Come face-to-face with the early days of ACG's alarming line, every horror comic from June 1953, hypodermic horrors, DC's Gothic romance comics, Marvel's Giant-Size terrors, Skywald and Warren's chillers, and Atlas Seaboard's shocking magazines. The full-color opus exhumes Bernie Wrightson's darkest constructs, plus artwork by Frank Frazetta, Neal Adams, Mike Kaluta, Steve Ditko, Matt Fox, Warren Kremer, Lee Elias, Bill Everett, Russ Heath, The Gurch, and many more! Cole, Disbrow wrote and drew many fear-inducing tales specializing in terrifying demons, scary apparitions, and a horde of hairy monsters. This full color, large format book culls the best of Disbrow's work from moldy comics like Dark Mysteries, Ghostly Weird Stories, Spook, and Startling Terror Tales. A revealing and lengthy interview with the creator serves a dark, ghostly-weird, startling, and profusely illustrated introduction! Hardcover, 9-in. x 11-in., 148 pages, full color.
