    1st printing.

By Philip J. Riley. Foreword by Robert Florey.

With the success of Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi, Universal Pictures was quick to capitalize on creating a new Lon Chaney in Bela Lugosi. Chaney had been the original choice to portray a duel role as both Dracula and Professor van Helsing, Dracula's adversary. Before production could begin, Chaney died, suddenly leaving Carl Laemmle Jr. without a star.

Laemmle Jr. had seen Dracula on the stage in New York City, although he could not recall if he had seen Lugosi or Raymond Huntley in the role of Count Dracula. However, Lugosi was performing in the touring company that happened to be in Los Angeles at that time. Was he the new Lon Chaney?

Lugosi was not Carl Jr.'s first choice for the role. However, he eventually won the part, and now they needed more ideas for him. Murders in the Rue Morgue, Cagliostro, The Invisible Man, and Frankenstein were top on the list.

One day in March 1931, Robert Florey, recently returned to Hollywood from Europe, was having lunch at the Musso and Frank Restaurant on Hollywood Boulevard. He was approached by an old acquaintance, Richard Schayer, head of Universal's story department. Schayer told him that his studio was looking for ideas for a new horror film to star Bela Lugosi and he knew Florey was involved with The Théâtre du Grand-Guignol de Paris, (a small theater, in an obscure alley in Paris that specialized in sadistic, shocking, explicit, violent melodramas and became known as the "Theater of Horrors." It opened in 1897 and closed in 1962.)

They both agreed on Frankenstein as the best choice. Schayer suggested that Florey would stand a better chance at being assigned the writer and director if he was to present the idea to Carl Laemmle Jr. We present now the script for Frankenstein as it would have been had Bela Lugosi starred and Robert Florey directed.

Written and Drawn by: Don Freeman

Best known for his perennial children's book favorite Corduroy, the story of a teddy bear who loses his button, Don Freeman less famously drew a handful of pre-modern-era graphic novels. In this centennial year of Freeman's birth, comes the delightful tribute to creative and commercial impulses, Skitzy. This lightly comedic tale follows a day in the life of a man literally divided between life as an office worker and as an artist. Without the use of dialogue, Freeman's fluid and economical illustrations creat an engrossing and fully believable environment, seducing the reader into a familiar world where expressive, gestural drawings explore the possibility of striking a perfect balance between work and play. Initially produced in a limited, self-published edition by the author himself, Skitzy finally receives the deluxe treatment it deserves.

    Hardcover, 7 1/2-in. x 9 1/2-in, B&W.

    Cover price $19.95.

Sweetly Diabolic Art of Jim Flora SC (2009) 1-1ST

This item is not in stock at MyComicShop. If you use the "Add to want list" tab to add this issue to your want list, we will email you when it becomes available.

1st printing. Jim Flora (1914-1998) has been rediscovered this decade as an alchemist of bizarre and politely disturbing fine art. His two previous books reveal an artist steeped in colorful contradiction. His images are fun, while threatening; playful, yet dangerous; humorous, but deadly. The Sweetly Diabolic Art burnishes Flora's reputation as one of the great overlooked artists of the 20th Century. This book features paintings, drawings, and sketches from the 1940s through the 1990s, most never previously published or exhibited, as well as more artifacts from Flora's 1940s tenure in the Columbia Records art department and rare newspaper and magazine illustrations spanning several decades. However, Sweetly Diabolic breaks new ground with the first printing of an early, abandoned children's book concept, The X-Ray Eyes of Wallingford Hume, drafted in the mid-1940s. Equally fascinating, on the sweet side, are original, never-before-published roughs, color overlays, and rejected images from Flora's 1950s and '60s children's books. In the diabolic vein, a gallery of uncirculated pen and pencil sketches from the 1940s uncorks a devilishly experimental side of the artist. Sweetly Diabolic also collects, for the first time between covers, rarely seen cartoon-science illustrations from a short-lived, now-obscure mid-'50s magazine, Research and Engineering, for which Flora briefly served as Art Director. The images are augmented by personal vignettes and mementos from the family archives, and includes a 1984 interview with award-winning graphic designer Robert M. Jones, who succeeded Flora as Art Director at Columbia in 1945. Jones was friends with Flora at every stage of the latter's career and offers priceless insights into his buddy's technique and personality. Softcover (Horizontal Format), 11-in. x 10-in., 180 pages, full color. Cover price $34.99.

White Flower Day GN (2003) 1-1ST

1st printing. Story and art by Steven Weissman. White Flower Day is an all-ages humor graphic novel starring a precocious gang of supernatural kids: Pullapart Boy, Kid Medusa, Li'l Bloody (a vampire toddler), the Li'l Tin Stars, and more. Think Hal Roach's classic Our Gang comedies (before child labor laws made them impossible to replicate, unless you're a cartoonist) meets the Universal Monsters, with a tad of Manga-style energy thrown in. The book consists of three stories: "White Flower Day," "Hostiles," and "I Saw You," all dealing with the theme of revenge (a new emotional desire to most of the tykes). "I Saw You" introduces Pullapart Boy's cousin, College Boy, who is younger, smarter and far more accomplished than P.B., attending university and hard at work on a secret science project. "Hostiles" tells of a bizarre, three-day nature hike with Li'l Bloody, the Li'l Tin Stars, "Mean" Chubby Cheeks' and Chubby's usually-absent father, involving grisly forest-action and baffling acts of sabotage! Weissman's charming and respectful approach to his child characters has been compared to Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts, though Weissman employs a distinctly darker sense of humor without excluding younger readers from his audience. White Flower Day is his best book to date, a mix of absurd imagination and very human emotion, certain to entertain and enlighten readers of all ages. Softcover, 7-in. x 7-in., 112 pages, B&W. Cover price $14.95.
