Mike's Place HC (2015 First Second Books) A True Story of Love, Blues, and Terror in Tel Aviv 1-1ST

1st printing. Written by Jack Baxter and Joshua Faudem. Art and cover by Koren Shadmi. Mike's Place was one of the few spots in Tel Aviv where Jews, Christians, and Muslims could hang out peaceably, surrounded by the expats who filled the bar every night. It was a cosmopolitan haven from the conflict, a local gem that many pointed to as a hopeful sign that peace could come to the Middle East after all. In the spring of 2003, filmmakers Jack Baxter and Josh Faudem had just begun making a documentary about the phenomenon of Mike's Place. And then the bar was destroyed in a suicide bombing that took three lives and wounded another fifty people - an attack that changed Jack and Josh's lives forever. Mike's Place is a gripping nonfiction accounting of the lives of a handful of people who came together in hope, then had to find their way together through despair. Hardcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 192 pages, B&W. Cover price $22.99.

Story and art by Sophie Lambda.

Part graphic memoir, part self-help book, So Much For Love guides readers with honesty and humor through the disorienting spiral of a toxic relationship and offers a clarifying and empathetic point of view.

Sophie had always been cynical about love-until she meets Marcus. His affection and doting praise melt away her defenses. The beginning of their relationship was a whirlwind romance, but over time she finds herself on uneven footing. Marcus lies. He's violently angry and bewilderingly inconsistent. Yet somehow he always manages to explain away his behavior and to convince Sophie that it's all in her head. Sophie comes to realize that she's become trapped in a cycle of abuse with someone with narcissistic personality disorder.

Once she gets out of the relationship, Sophie turns her pen to documenting the experience and offers bracing, hilarious, and empathetic advice to any readers who may be in similar straits.

Reynard's Tale HC (2023 First Second Books) A Story of Love and Mischief 1-1ST

    (see more images)

1st printing. Story and art by en Hatke.Beloved children's author Ben Hatke turns his pen to a very special project for adults: an atmospheric tribute to the medieval folklore tradition of trickster tales, starring Reynard the Fox. Inspired by the twelfth-century tales of the indomitable trickster fox Reynard, this offbeat tribute to the archetypal rogue has a satisfyingly old-fashioned feeling to it. Although this Reynard adventure is entirely the creation of modern fairy-tale master Ben Hatke (Mighty Jack), it fits seamlessly into the body of Reynard tales still beloved in Europe to this day. Featuring charming black-and-white illustrations and a clever narrative, Reynard's Tale follows our hero through a series of encounters with other classic figures from this body of folklore to piece together a headlong journey through a perilous landscape filled with murderers, kings, ex-lovers, mermaids, and even Death herself. Hardcover, 6-in. x 7-in., 80 pages, 2C. Cover price $22.99.

Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage HC (2015 Pantheon) The (Mostly) True Story of the First Computer 1-1ST

1st printing. Story and art by Sydney Padua. A unique take on the unrealized invention of the computer in the 1830s by the eccentric polymath Charles Babbage and his accomplice, the daughter of Lord Byron, Ada, Countess of Lovelace. When Ada translated Babbage's plans for the "Difference Engine," her footnotes contained the first appearance of the general computing theory, 100 years before an actual computer was built. Sydney Padua gives us an alternate reality in which Lovelace and Babbage build the Difference Engine, and then use it to do battle with the American banking system, the publishing industry, their own fears that their project will lose funding, and a villainous street musician who will force the two friends to reevaluate their priorities-"for the sake of both London and science." Hardcover, 320 pages, B&W. Cover price $28.95.
