1st printing. Story and art by Robert Crumb. Robert Crumb's first iconic character — and still possibly his most — was Fritz the Cat: the horny, high, hipster feline whose wild adventures and sexual escapades captivated countercultural audiences from the mid-60s until 1972, when Ralph Bakshi turned the strips into an X-rated animated film that Crumb hated so much, he famously killed off the character and never returned to him. The Life and Death of Fritz the Cat contains all the Fritz stories from the earliest sketchbook-drawn tales ("Hey, Ol' Cat!" and "Fritz Comes On Strong") to the wild adventure stories ("Special Agent for the C.I.A.") to the classic "peak" Fritz stories ("Fritz the No-Good") all the way to the despairing "Fritz the Cat, Superstar" with its infamous icepick ending. Plus an introduction by Crumb, sketchbook pages, and more in a new paperback edition. Softcover, 8 1/2-in. x 11-in., 96 pages, B&W. Mature Readers Cover price $19.99.

1st printing. I can express something [with animals] that is different from what I put into my work about humans... I can put more nonsense, more satire and fantasy into the animals... — R. Crumb Created by an adolescent R. Crumb in the late 1950s, Fritz the Cat rose to fame — along with his creator — during the underground comix revolution of the 1960s, and remains Crumbs most well-known character and an internationally recognized icon of 1960s culture. Fritz is a feline, freewheeling chiseler who allowed Crumb to express some of his most acidic commentary on American culture. Tragicomedy, farce and satire all rolled into one, The Life and Death of Fritz the Cat chronicles the very best of Fritz's adventures from his early days as an idealistic college student to his ultimate fate as a jaded, burned-out superstar, including Crumbs infamous send-off of the character in the wake of Ralph Bakshis animated feature film, an experience and project that completely dissatisfied Crumb. Finally collected in a single volume, these Fritz stories are a funny, insightful, authentic record of a tumultuous period in American life, with humor and compassion by the most well-respected cartoonist of all time. Hardcover, 8 1/2-in. x 11-in., 96 pages, B&W. Mature Readers Cover price $19.99.
