Dounya Awada is a 24-year-old, devout Muslim, happy, healthy, and very much alive. But just a few years before, she nearly starved to death. Her struggle began when she was six years old. Little Dounya wanted nothing less than to be perfect, like her mother. In Dounya's culture, food is nearly synonymous with love. Food is nourishment, nourishment is love, love is life. Dounya began to eat to fill the growing need within her. She grew in size, eventually hitting over 200 pounds at just age 15. Food became her only friend. Her peers mocked her. She felt utterly alone. Her obsession with food did a turnabout. Dounya's horrific struggle with eating disorders has led her to advocate for boys and girls facing the same hurdles with which she struggled.

In the Shadow of No Towers HC (2004 Pantheon) 1-1ST

1st printing. Art Spiegelman defined the graphic novel memoir with his Pulitzer Prize-winning MAUS, which narrated his father's experiences in Auschwitz. Growing up with Holocaust survivor parents, he was taught that no place is truly safe. Spiegelman finally experienced that truth for himself on 9/11, as he and his wife raced to find their daughter, attending her first day of school two blocks away from the World Trade Center. The fragmented nature of the art and text reflect the scattered, painfully vivid thoughts that Spiegelman had both during and after those traumatic moments. The oversized, full-color spreads include panels drawn realistically, drawn MAUS-style (i.e., Spiegelman depicts himself as a mouse), and drawn in the style of early 20th century comics such as the Katzenjammer Kids and Bringing up Father. Those early comics were a comfort to Spiegelman during the terror and paranoia he felt (and still feels) post-9/11, and the book closes with a short history and reprints of those comics, which seem startlingly relevant to the current political situation. Hardcover, 10-in. x 14 1/2-in., 40 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $19.95.

    Journalist, Investigator, Feminist, and Philanthropist.

Nellie Bly was a woman who did not allow herself to be defined by the time she lived in, she rewrote the narrative and made her own way. Luciana Cimino's meticulously researched graphic-novel biography tells Bly's story through Miriam, a fictionalized female student at the Columbia School of Journalism in 1921.

While interviewing the famous journalist, Miriam learns not only about Bly's more sensational adventures, but also about her focus on self-reliance from an early age. And, of course, Bly's greatest feat of all, her journey around the world in 72 days.

As Miriam learns more of Bly's story, she realizes that the most important stories are necessarily the ones with the most dramatic headlines, but the ones that, in Nellie's words, "come from a deep feeling."
