The vampire kills his assailants, but is suffering from memory loss. Realizing he absorbs memories when he drinks blood, he leaves to seek his identity. Danny Ketch and Seer ride nearby but Seer directs him to the park. Riding in alone, Dan is attacked by the vampire, triggering his transformation into Ghost Rider. The vampire flees and Ghost Rider trails him to Lincoln Center, where the vampire finds an underground office in a nondescript building. In the basement office of a shadow intelligence agency, the employees are alerted by the vampire's arrival, identifying him as their operative, Night Terror. Night Terror kills the agency security officers, but Ghost Rider arrives and attacks him. The agency employees trigger the office's self-destruct, but Night Terror evades Ghost Rider by becoming mist and begins killing the employees. Ghost Rider spears Night Terror to the wall and rides the sole survivor of his onslaught out of the building seconds before it explodes. Ghost Rider reunites with Seer, but fails to notice a cloud of mist rising out of a sewer grate.... 64 pages, FC.

The next morning, Dan recognizes Deathwatch presiding over the grand opening of his office building. While Deathwatch receives a financial update on his criminal ventures from Beck, Dan arrives at the building and flirts with Renée. That night, on a date with Renée, Dan's efforts to investigate Deathwatch are interrupted when Stacy encounters them. Later, Dan calls Renée at her apartment. Deathwatch, who has bugged his employees' phones, learns of the relationship and sends ninjas to kill Renée. When the ninjas attack, Dan races over and rescues Renée, taking her to Jack's. As Dan leaves the house, ninjas knocking him out. When the ninjas assault the house, Jack calls the police, and Stacy responds, killing three ninjas. Dan transforms into Ghost Rider and defeats the ninjas. He ignores Jack's efforts to arrest him, and goes to the office tower. Ghost Rider charges into the lobby on his skull-cycle, and encounters Deathwatch on a video monitor. From his limo outside, Deathwatch bids goodbye to Ghost Rider and detonates a bomb, destroying the building. 32 pages, FC.

While Ghost Rider crawls under the debris of Deathwatch's demolished office building, Linda Wei reports in a live broadcast that Ghost Rider is responsible for the deaths in the building's homeless shelter basement. Ghost Rider hears voices of the survivors and anguishes over the death surrounding him, vowing vengeance. Meanwhile, Deathwatch soaks in the pain and death from his new office, and summons Hag and Troll. With Beck now superfluous, Deathwatch kills the assistant. At the demolition site, Ghost Rider encounters a dying woman and comforts her in her final moments. Later, Deathwatch, Hag and Troll assault the police precinct and kill the ninjas being interrogated by Badilino. Badilino shoots Deathwatch, but the villains escape. Meanwhile, Ghost Rider discovers a group of survivors and leads them to safety. Deathwatch prepares for a flight to the Middle East, but when he learns that Ghost Rider is alive, he delays the trip to attend to the loose in. Now willing to kill Deathwatch, Ghost Rider rushes to the hospital, where Snowblind is being treated for gunshot wounds afflicted by Badilino. Eager to reveal Deathwatch's location, Snowblind eases Ghost Rider's conscience by assuring him that Deathwatch isn't human. 32 pages, FC.

Meanwhile, Ghost Rider rescues a hostage from a crazed drug dealer. Later, he transforms into Dan and calls Johnny Blaze. Instructs Blaze to get his journal to Francis if anything happens to him. Snowblind awakens in Deathwatch's hideout to find he is among dozens of Deathwatch's other captives, awaiting a sacrificial ceremony. Elsewhere, Dan is getting his affairs in order, mentally preparing himself for the ultimate battle. Prowling Greenwich Village's streets, Dan hears the cry of one of Deathwatch's victims and transforms into Ghost Rider. Deathwatch calls upon Hag and Troll to " tenderize" Snowblind, but their torture is cut short when Ghost Rider crashes in. Ghost Rider dispatches both soul-stealers, while Deathwatch drains the life from Snowblind. Not yet sated, Deathwatch turns to Ghost Rider, and they battle. Deathwatch breaks one of Ghost Rider's ribs and beat him with it, taunting him over his unwillingness to kill. Ghost Rider reminds Deathwatch that his reluctance to kill only applies to humans and punches into Deathwatch's chest. Deathwatch swells and explodes, with the blast destroying the building's top floor. Ghost Rider emerges from the rubble, wondering what the future holds now that so many of his foes are dead. 32 pages, FC.

Stern announces to the Firm's technicians that Blackout will deliver Ghost Rider to them, in return for restoring his facial features. That night, the Firm releases Blackout from Evergreen Hospital. After killing a Firm surveillance team, Blackout calls Dan and taunts him, threatening to kill someone close to him, and if Ghost Rider shows up, all his loved ones will die. Elsewhere, angered over Blackouts release, the Firm orders Stern to return with Blackout, or suffer excruciating pain. Dan arrives at Stacy's too late to protect the Dolan's, and Blackout lures him back home, where he has also captured Francis and Jack. Their fight leads to the cemetery, where blackout slits Dan's throat. Dan's spirit watches his body transform into Ghost Rider. Blackout panics and runs, but Ghost Rider pursues. Stern appears and attempts to recapture Blackout, but Ghost Rider arrives, ready to punish both villains. When the task force's helicopter arrives, Ghost Rider leaves, with Stern and Blackout in tow. The next morning, a police search fails to find Ghost Rider, who is hiding in a crypt with the Cypress Hills Joker' s help. He uses part of his chain to seal Blackout and Stern in a coffin. Afraid to risk Dan's life by transforming, he decides to leave for New Orleans, and seek the help of Johnny Blaze. 32 pages, FC.

Story continued from X-Men (1991 1st Series) #8. In New Orleans, a black clad assassin kills Bernard le Branche. Ghost Rider arrives in New Orleans seeking Johnny Blaze's help in healing Dan Ketch, but ruminates on his lack of self-knowledge and the fragility of his tether to humanity. Outside the city, the X-Men, en route to prevent a bloody war between the Thieves' and Assassins' Guild, are pulled over by Deputy Sheriff. Wolverine and Jubilee subdue the deputy, while Cyclops and Gambit destroyed his car. While riding in through the citys alleyways, Ghost Rider witnesses the assassin's murder of another Guild thief and his pregnant wife. The assassin lures Ghost Rider underground where he is surrounded by Guild Assassins, who transform into Brood drones and restrain him. The X-Men reunite with Bella Donna Boudreaux and Rogue, who arrived ahead to perform recon. The X-Men and Bella Donna find the murdered Thief couple, but Wolverine's senses direct them to the assassins underground layer. The Brood then attacks the X-Men, who are horrified to see that one of the Brood has taking Ghost Rider as a host. Story continues in X-Men (1991 1st Series) #9. 32 pages, FC.

Story continued from X-Men (1991 1st Series) #9. Ghost Rider in the X-Men search through the catacombs and find the Guild's children bound by the Brood. As the other X-Men free the children, Gambit, Wolverine, and Ghost Rider leave to hunt down the Brood Queen for her role in Bella Donna's death. Within the void, Dan's spirit recovers from Ghost Rider's possession by the Brood. Outside the city, Clara Menninger notifies Johnny Blaze of Ghost Rider's presence in New Orleans. Blaze tells Clara to inform his wife that he will catch up at their next stop in Providence, Rhode Island, then rides off. The black garb assassin and more Brood drones soon surround Ghost Rider, Gambit, and Wolverine, and even more drones attack the other X-Men. Ghost Rider's group dispatches their foes, but they are prevented from chasing the assassin by the arriving Brood Queen. The Queen speeds back to where the children were held, but Ghost Rider leashes her with his chain and tows her above ground. The Brood Queen is destroyed by the combined efforts of Ghost Rider, the X-Men, and the arriving Blaze. Gambit swears a debt of honor to Ghost Rider before he and Blaze ride off, but the assassin, watching overhead, swears vengeance on them all. 32 pages, FC.

Danny Ketch reflects on how his life has changed since becoming Ghost Rider, until his mother interrupts him. Blackout's recent attack has made her consider the possibility of losing him, prompting her to admit something she never had the courage to tell him before: He and Barbara were adopted. Not sure what to think, Dan goes out for some air. Meanwhile, the Firm raids HEART's HQ, killing all the mercenaries except Meagher, who they take prisoner. Elsewhere, the insane Madcap, unable to feel pain since the accident that killed his family and mutated him, decides to show others that life is meaningless. Going to Grand Central Station, he uses his lunacy – introducing gazes to send several bystanders on reckless, life-threatening rampages. Driving by, Danny witnesses one victims death, triggering his transformation; he catches Madcap, and deploys the penance stare, making Madcap feel pain for the first time since his accident. However, after he departs, Madcap recovers, overjoyed at ceiling the long-lost sensation, and desperate to experience it again, no matter how much innocent blood he needs to spill to do so. Dan returns home, deciding to find his birth parents, convinced they must somehow be tied to Ghost Rider. 32 pages.

In Cypress Hills Cemetery Ghost Rider stops a man from murdering a woman, disabling him with the penance stare. The man, a serial killer, is left reeling as he experiences his victims agonies, but moments later is slain by a raggedly clothed ninja; a gang vandalizing the cemetery later suffers the same fate. Dan is at home reassuring his mother that his decision to move out is unrelated to his recently learning he was adopted, when he catches Linda Wei reporting the discovery of the gang's bodies. Scared Blackout may be back, Dan goes out hunting, passing by chance under an elevated train where the ninja is slaughtering his latest targets. Alerted by blood pouring down, Dan tries to change, but nothing happens; Dan rides up onto the tracks, and, as the train passes by Cypress Hill Cemetery, he jumps from his bike onto the train, watching the motorcycle fall to the cemetery below. Encountering a wounded commuter, Dan spontaneously transforms into Ghost Rider and he confronts the ninja, learning his opponent is the Deathwatch agent seemingly slain long before; as they fight, the ninja reveals he really serves another master, he promises is coming for Ghost Rider. The flaming-skulled hero punches the ninja off the train, which runs over the killer. Dan returns to the cemetery for his bike, and finds it held by the mysterious Caretaker; to Dan surprise, the Caretaker knows of his alter ego, and tells Dan that he is wrong to believe innocent blood needs to be spilled to trigger his transformation. Promising they will see more of one another in coming days, the Caretaker departs, leaving Dan desperate answer. 32 pages, FC.

Mike Badilino defeats two Firm agents who attacked him in his apartment, but is overpowered by their companion, the super powered female Heart Attack, who demands information on Ghost Rider; a phone call from Mike's task force, informing him Ghost Rider is in Greenwich Village, provides Mike a momentary distraction, and he escapes. In the Village, Ghost Rider is battling Death Ninja when Suicide intervenes, still wanting to die and needing Ghost Rider around for that to happen. Deciding the two deserve one another, Ghost Rider departs, and the ninja angrily impales a happy Suicide. Entering an alley, Ghost Rider becomes Dan, but Caretaker unexpectedly appears to chastise him for leaving the fight. Telling Dan he might need Suicide in the future, Caretaker sends him back to save Suicide. Moments after Ghost Rider returns to the fray, Heart Attack arrives. Pulling her mask off, she reveals she is Tyler Meagher, enhanced by the Firm, and accuses him of murdering her HEART colleagues. She hits him with a device that sticks to his skull and paralyzes him, just as Badilino moves in, Caretaker comes up behind him and decks him with a shovel. Pulling the paralyzed but unharmed Ghost Rider from under a layer of earth the explosion covered him with, Caretaker removes Heart Attack's device, then tells him to gather up Suicide skeleton, and bring it with them. 32 pages, FC.

    Australian Price Variant. "Transformations in Pain!" Guest starring Daredevil. Written by Howard Mackie. Art by Bret Blevins and Fred Fredericks. The demonic succubus visits Henry Bronson, sleeping in a Hell's Kitchen homeless shelter, feeding off his life force as a prelude to targeting ghost rider. His dying agonies wake the next beds resident, Calvin Zabo, who rants about killing everyone when he becomes Mr. Hyde again. Meanwhile, in Caretaker's basement Dan and Caretaker watch Suicide's skeleton healing. Dan leaves to head home, but is attacked outside by Succubus; transforming into Ghost Rider, he drives her off, then changes back to Dan. No longer sure what triggers his changes, or who attacked him, and suspecting Caretaker might know, he turns to go back inside, but the basement doorway has vanished. At that moment a weakened Succubus tries to drain a derelict outside the shelter, but Daredevil intervenes. She flees inside, choosing to feed off the Zabo instead, inadvertently triggering his change in to Hyde, and he throws her out the window. Witnessing this, Daredevil scoops up the stunt Succubus and flees, with Hyde pursuing. Dan spots the running battle, but it struck by flying debris, and when Hyde turns his attention towards the fallen biker, Daredevil drop Succubus to defend Dan. As Hyde and Daredevil clash, Succubus attacks Dan, who changes back and forth to Ghost Rider as she drains him. Leaping away from Hyde, Daredevil targets Succubus, and when Hyde tries to attack them both, Ghost Rider intercepts; unfazed by Hyde's blows, Ghost Rider ends the bout with his penance stare, then becomes Dan again. Daredevil stuns Succubus, and helps Dan escape as the police arrive. As the cops close in, Succubus drains Hyde's energy, insisting that Ghost Rider must belong to her master, Nightmare. 32 pages, FC.

    Australian Price Variant. "Forward to the Shadows!" Guest starring Archangel. Written by Howard Mackie. Art by Bret Blevins and Fred Fredericks. Seeking to stop the Firm's rash of attacks against him, Ghost Rider flushes out Heart Attack and a squad of Firm agents at Cypress Hill Cemetery. Ghost Rider learns that the Firm seeks to make him into their killing machine. As he watches the fight from the Firm's headquarters, Stern reports to his shadowy boss, who insists on being addressed as Stern's master. Realizing that it was the Firm, not Ghost Rider, who killed her people, Heart Attack leaves the battle, intent on killing Stern. The X-Man Archangel spots the fight and helps Ghost Rider rout the Firm agents, who retreat to their hospital-base, leading the heroes right to Stern. Ghost Rider gives Stern the penance stare and leaves him incapacitated. Once they depart the Firm's master appears on a monitor, claiming the Firm agents' souls and killing Stern. Heart Attack arrives in time to witness this act, angry that her vengeance was denied, and the Firm's master takes her too, sending out tendrils of blackness that pull her through the monitor screen. 32 pages, FC.

After slaying muggers in Brooklyn, Vengeance checks in with Mephisto, who orders him to find Caretaker, whose blood will reveal Ghost Rider's location. Following a battle with demons that destroyed the Quentin Carnival, Johnny Blaze takes Ghost Rider and carnival workers Kodiak, Clara Menninger, Wolf and Maranda Woods to Dan Ketch's apartment, where they ponder the mysterious note left Blaze by the slain Eli McIntyre. Ketch goes to a market to buy food, but transforms into Ghost Rider when a robbery starts. At Cypress Hills Cemetery, Caretaker and Francis Ketch, clearly old acquaintances, talk about the fate of her children. They Vengeance attacks Caretaker, who leads him to the market. Vengeance battles Ghost Rider and gains the upper hand before Caretaker takes him down. Blaze arrives and Caretaker orders him and Ghost Rider to flee, spouting a cryptic message about the future. Vengeance recovers and Caretaker vanishes. 32 pages, FC.
