1st printing. Text by David Leopold. Art and cover by Al Hirschfeld. This handsome volume presents 25 favorite Al Hirschfeld portraits drawn from Stephen Sondheims musicals. The art prints in this oversize poster book can be easily removed and framed, making it an ideal gift for Sondheim fans. This first volume in a series of deluxe Hirschfeld poster books contains art drawn from life before the opening night of each of Sondheims productions. On the reverse side are rare, ancillary images from the archives, as well as an introduction by Bernadette Peters, an essay by Ben Brantley, and text by David Leopold, Hirschfelds archivist and creative director of the Al Hirschfeld Foundation. Hirschfelds images capture the essence of the performances even better than the photographs of the shows. All of Sondheims best-known plays are included—West Side Story, Follies, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, and Sunday in the Park with George. Al Hirschfeld drew his first Sondheim show in 1957—West Side Story. In his iconic, illustrative style, Hirschfeld captured almost all of Sondheims Broadway shows and several films featuring the composers songs and scripts. Sondheim was a Hirschfeld collector, acquiring drawings directly from the artist and through his friends and collaborators like Hal Prince. In his last interview just five days before his death on November 26, 2021, the New York Times ran a photo of Sondheim in his home with an image of Hirschfelds Putting it Together in the background. All images for this book have been scanned from the archives of the Al Hirschfeld Foundation, ensuring the highest possible quality. Softcover, 11-in. x 14-in., 58 pages, B&W. Volume 1 - 1st printing. "Decade One: 1980-1990!" By Jeremy Parish. A chronological journey through gamings least linear format: the action RPG. The metroidvania genre has become a staple of video gaming. From solo indie development operations to big-budget creations by the industry's top studios, these exploratory action games with heavy role-playing influences are everywhere. But where did they come from in the first place? Although the genre's name might appear to hold the answer—a combination of Nintendo's sci-fi adventure Metroid and Konami's monster-movie action series Castlevania—the metroidvania draws from a far wider range of influences. The History of Metroidvania: Decade One turns back the clock to trace the primal origins of one of the most popular and enduring video game formats. The story begins years before anyone had conceived of the name metroidvania—before the first Metroid and Castlevania games had even arrived on the scene. In this exhaustively researched publication, you'll see how gaming trends of the early 1980s came together to give us initial expressions of the metroidvania concept, and how the design language of the genre evolved over the course of the 8-bit hardware era. From text-based adventures to coin-op tests of pure dexterity, the metroidvania took its cues from early computer hits and best-selling console masterpieces, evolving alongside the medium itself. Like the genre itself, the early history of the metroidvania features plenty of surprises and dead ends along the way, but ultimately leads to a satisfying conclusion. Hardcover, 9 1/2-in. x 12-in., 232 pages, full color. Cover price $54.99.
