Cerebus TPB (1987-2004 Aardvark-Vanaheim) By Dave Sim 3RM-REP

Remastered Edition - Volume 3 - 12th printing. "Church and State: Volume I!" Collects Cerebus (1977-2004) #52-80. Story and art by Dave Sim. Thirty years ago, the idea that a genocidal, absolutist "fire and brimstone" faith-based ideology could actually steamroll its way across national borders, financing itself by looting its own citizenry was considered too far-fetched "even for comic books" so that it could only be addressed in the broad confines of the Ultimate Parody Comic, Dave Sim & Gerhard's Cerebus. Says Dave Sim: "Sean Robinson and Mara Sedlins of Living the Line continue their astonishing restoration of the World's Longest Graphic Novel with Church & State I, arguably the most challenging of the 16 books to reproduce accurately, because a good 60 to 80 pages consist of Gerhard drawing for reproduction for the first time, learning what works and what doesn't work. Sean and Mara make it ALL work, bringing out levels of detail never seen before." Softcover, 7 1/2-in. x 10-in., 600 pages, B&W. Cover price $35.00.

    Remastered Edition

Volume 4 - 2nd and later printings. "Church & State: Volume II!" Collects Cerebus (1977-2004) #81-111.

Story and art by Dave Sim.

The multi-year Cerebus Restoration project continues with CHURCH & STATEII! This edition will be signed-and-numbered by writer/cartoonist Dave Sim (limited to the amount of copies of the initial Diamond order).

C & S II, the fourth volume of the 6,000 page CEREBUS epic, is a book bubbling over with conflict, with borrowed characters and quasi-legal parodies--including a scorching red-hot take on Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns--each synthesized and absorbed into the whole. All of this in the midst of a plot dense with revelation, with changing allegiances and scale shifts that threaten to upend the titular character and even his world. In an industry now filled with "cosmic" plot-lines that last a few months before the status quo reasserts itself, C + S II is the real deal--a dangerous comic, where the various actors behave like real people, beholden only to their own self-conceptions--impulsive, unpredictable, but always real and authentic and grounded.

CHURCH & STATE II is arguably an early artistic peak for the book, as Sim and background artist Gerhard drove themselves to relentless experimentation, using each monthly installment to push the boundaries of what the monthly comics form was truly capable. This art is presented here for the first time in remastered form: painstakingly restored page-by-page from hundreds of pages of original artwork with the original photo negatives filling in the gaps, revealing astounding detail never before present outside of the original art itself. The carefully-textured, detail-rich art is now on full display for the first time, including delicate line work, slashing brush lines alongside organic texture and splatter, and some of the most sophisticated pen and ink rendering of the second half of the twentieth century.

This volume also includes eight brand-new pages of extras, including a 6,000 word essay by restorer and critic Sean Michael Robinson, that contextualizes the wild scale-shifts of Church & State among other resonant works, including but not limited to, Tolstoy's War and Peace and Shooter and Zeck's Secret Wars. (Yes, this is the only solicitation in Diamond history, possibly the only sentence in the English language as of yet, to invoke those titles simultaneously.)

    Softcover, 7 1/2-in. x10-in., 620 pages, B&W.

    Cover price $42.00.

    Remastered Edition - Volume 5 - 2nd and later printings. "Jaka's Story!" Collects Cerebus (1977-2004) #114-136.

Story and art by Dave Sim and Gerhard.

Jaka's Story, the fifth volume of the Cerebus series, represents a point of departure for the series, focusing as it does on a small cast of characters, living out their lives in orbital, Thoreau-like "quiet desperation", drawn ever inward, until at last, they inevitably collide.

This new edition, painstakingly restored and printed on acid-free paper with a durable sewn binding, reveals astounding detail never before present outside of the original art itself. This volume also includes eight brand-new pages of extras, including a 6,000-word essay by restorer and critic Sean Michael Robinson, discussing the background and "secret origins" of the book, providing historical context for a whole new generation of readers.

Remastered Edition - Volume 10 - 6th printing. "Minds!" Collects Cerebus (1977-2004) #187-200. By Dave Sim and Gerhard. The multi-year Cerebus Restoration project continues! Minds, the tenth volume of the 6,000 page Cerebus epic, finds the titular misanthropic aardvark hurtling through space alongside Cirin, his opponent and fellow aardvark, both heading for a direct collision with their small-maker - "Dave" - a mysterious being who talks with them about themselves and their world, and who just might resemble Cerebus writer/cartoonist Dave Sim. Minds is the groundbreaking conclusion to the first two-thirds of the Cerebus epic, presented here for the first time in remastered form: painstakingly restored page-by-page from original artwork and photo negatives, and revealing detail never before present on the printed page.
