When the Comics Code Authority cracked down on the comic book industry in 1955, horror comics all but faded from the scene. Enter Creepy magazine, publisher James Warren's tribute (after a fashion) to EC's vaunted horror comics line, which couldn't survive the Code's strong arm censorship tactics. Magazines weren't subject to the same rules, giving Warren the freedom to publish more mature content. Eerie, Vampirella, and other Warren publications followed. Stories in this first issue of Creepy include: Voodoo by Bill Pearson and Joe Orlando; H2O World! by Larry Ivie, Al Williamson, and Roy G. Krenkel; Vampires fly at Dusk! by Archie Goodwin and Reed Crandall; Werewolf! by Larry Ivie and Frank Frazetta; Bewitched! by Larry Ivie and Gray Morrow; The Success Story by Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson; and Pursuit of the Vampire! by Archie Goodwin and Angelo Torres. Features the first appearance of Uncle Creepy. Cover art by Jack Davis. Cover price $0.35.

Cover by Lou Morales. Stories and art by Lou Morales, Art Capello, Frank Frollo, and Stan Campbell. Pre-Code crime comics from Charlton, sometimes published under its short-lived Capitol or Law and Order imprints. Mr. and Mrs. Chase are aided by teen gang "The Cobras" (who ride around in an Archie-like jalopy) while investigating a narcotics ring and a mad millionaire who keeps live alligators in his weird mansion. Not your typical crime-comics story. A small-time hood named Lippy still knows enough to bring down a major organized-crime syndicate. A detective flies out to Skull Lake to investigate killings that seem to be the work of a lake monster. Crime Clues: A Simple Case of Murder!; Mr. and Mrs. Chase: The Cobras; Rub-Out!; Plainly Poison; The Demon of Skull Lake; Radio Patrol: Case of the Bottled Murder. 32 pages, Full Color. Cover by Charles Biro. Stories and art by Frank Frazetta, Fred Guardineer, Carl Wessler, Al McWilliams, Dick Rockwell, and Charles Biro. The title that launched the crime comics genre, Crime Does Not Pay was noted for its violent pre-Code content and lurid tales of underworld life. An investigator tries to prove that a gangster's suicide was actually murder, but a blond femme fatale is out to get him first. A lawyer goes to work for a racketeer, but when his sister gets drawn in, he realizes he's gone too far. Detective Boyd learns that a doll holds the clue to an arson and murder gang. A classic anti-drug PSA featuring early art by fantasy and comics legend Frank Frazetta. Also featuring a vintage ad for "Lev Gleason Comics picture trading cards." The Last Stand of Walther "The Profile" Taylor; We Can Stop the Enemies of Youth; Crooked Mouthpiece; The Killer Came East; The Case of the Deadly Doll; The Frame-Up That Backfired. 32 pages, Full Color. Direct Edition. "The Summoning!" Written by Marv Wolfman. Art by George Perez and Dick Giordano. This is it, the biggest, and arguably most important, event in the history of the DCU. A wave of unstoppable destructive force is sweeping across the multiverse and indiscriminately destroying everything in its path. Nothing seems able to stop it. The Crime Syndicate of Amerika (evil versions of the JLA) of Earth-3 die trying, along with their world. Batman receives an ominous warning from the Flash. Weather and natural disasters are out of control. An eclectic group of heroes and villains from around the multiverse are assembled to halt the death and destruction, and the being known as the Monitor may be the only one who can help them. 1st appearance of Alexander Luthor. Featuring the deaths of the Crime Syndicate of Amerika and Lex Luthor of Earth-3. NOTE: What can I say about "Crisis" accept that it's epic, meaningful, engrossing, and grand in scope. As an eleven year old comic fan, I remember being absolutely blown away by this story. Marv Wolfman and George Perez are truly masters of their craft. - Odinson, Lone Star Comics Archivist Cover price $0.75.
