The Defenders have stopped August Masters' plan to start WWIII, but at a very high price. Nighthawk apparently died in the blast that destroyed the complex, and Valkyrie was killed right after the Defenders escaped from the complex. So now the downtrodden heroes return to New York and mourn their friends. A while later the Defenders hold a memorial service for the departed Nighthawk and Valkyrie -- and many of their friends and teammates attend. However Hellcat does not. And while Patsy writes in her diary...she's visited by an apparition of Valkyrie! Is Brunnhilde possibly alive? To investigate the matter further, Dr. Strange and Daimon Hellstrom hold a séance -- which reveals the Asgardian villain behind Valkyrie's plight! Appearances by Captain America, Daredevil, Gargoyle, Hawkeye, Hulk, Luke Cage, Silver Surfer, Sub-Mariner, Thor, Vera Cantor, Karnilla, and the Enchantress.
