Cover by Raeburn Van Buren. Stories and art by Raeburn Van Buren and Budd Sheppard. Confusingly, while numbered #2 on cover, this issue is listed as #1 in the indicia. The comic-strip adventures of city boy Slats, his small-town sweetheart Becky, and Becky's reprobate father "Bathless Groggins," with exceptionally nice art by Raeburn Van Buren. Becky believes Slats has been killed when the merchant steamer he signed onto is sunk. But he's actually been shanghaied onto the ship called the Black Cat, far out at sea. Meanwhile, Becky joins a dance troupe in Hollywood to forget Slats. 32 pages, Full Color. Cover price $0.10.

Cover by Rudolph Dirks. Stories and art by Rudolph Dirks and Jerry DeMott. In 1948, when Peanuts didn't exist and Superman was only 10 years old, the pioneering strip Captain and the Kids, aka The Katzenjammer Kids, was celebrating its 50th anniversary. United Features Syndicate celebrates with the debut comic featuring some of the mischievous Kids' misadventures. Mama, the Inspector and most of all the Captain bear the brunt of Hans and Fritz's mean-spirited pranks, but the Kids always get it in the end. The Captain falls asleep in a wheeled chair, and when the Kids use it to sneak out, the snoozing Captain goes on a joy ride. Hans und Fritz disguise themselves as a rhinoceros, but the fun begins when a real rhino gets involved. After Bedelia the ostrich eats a fortune in gold, the result is a merry chase. Plus a two-page article on the history of the influential strip and its artist, Rudolph Dirks, including a discussion of the Supreme Court decision that split the strip into two versions. Kids' Now Fifty Years Old; Yo Ho Ho for the Pinochle Pirates; The Captain and the Kids. 48 pages, Full Color. Cover price $0.10.

DAISY HANDBOOK # 2, published 1948 by the Daisy Manufacturing Company. Daisy Air Rifle ads were very frequently and prominently featured in comic books for many decades starting in the 1940's. This book is very unusual, because it has comic book features from several different publishers: DC, Fawcett, Dell and True Comics (Parents Magazine Institute). It also has a 10 cent cover price, rather than being a promotional giveaway. The book was primarily sold through the mail. The book is pocket digest size and 132 pages, including covers. The comics are in black and white. Features include Captain Marvel (Shazam), Robotman (who was a backup feature in Action Comics with Superman), Red Ryder by Fred Harman, the Boy Commandos, Ibis the Invincible, and the humorous "Culture Corner" by Basil Wolverton. There are also real fact features on Leonardo Da Vinci, Rudolph Diesel, and Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame baseball player Bob Feller. The center is an 8 page full-color Daisy catalog, featuring Red Ryder and showcasing such products as the 1000 shot repeater cowboy carbine, the number 118 pistol target set, the daisy pump gun (king of all air rifles), daisy bullseye shot, the Buck Rogers U 238 Atomic Pistol Holster Set, the Number 71 Daisy Repeating Water Pistol, and more. The back cover has an ad for a poster - "The American Boys' Bill of Rights", featuring a kid holding a rifle. Cover price $0.10.
