Issue 1. Circa 1965. Fanzine created, written and illustrated by Johnny Ryan. This first issue introduces Ryan's own creation, Mr. Mercury. First page contains a one-paragraph introduction by Ryan and a small superhero drawing, with his mailing information below and a plug for his other zine, "House of Heroes". Remaining 10 pages contain Mr. Mercury's origin story. Beneath the panels on the final page, Ryan includes a charming apology for the crudeness of his illustrations, explaining that it's now 1:35 am and how exhausted he is. In true "get it done no matter what" fashion, the paper stocks are mismatched and make use of whatever paper was available to him. This production was obviously a true labor of love for the young Ryan. 8.5" x 11". 11 ditto pages. Cover price $0.20.

Premium example of amateur comics from the Sixties! Bill Spicer, editor. Historic significance and features of Fantasy Illustrated #4: While Richard Kyle initially coined the terms "graphic story" and "graphic novel" in Capa-Alpha #2 (November, 1964), Capa-Alpha was only available to members of the APA and was extremely limited in circulation (less than 50 copies). Thus, Richard Kyle's Graphic Story Review column is the 1st public coining and explanation of the terms to general comicdom, a significant event! The issue also features one of Jeff Jones' 1st published strips, KU: Primordial, a Tor-like hero. This issue was also the 1st (and last) Fantasy Illustrated to feature super-hero strips: Buddy Saunders provides the Patriot while Bill DuBay drew Dreamsman and Lucky (both written by Steve Perrin). Excellent back cover by Jim Jones, plus letters from soon to be pro Doug Moench, super sci-fi fan/writer Alex Eisenstein, artist Landon Chesney, and fan legends Fred Patten and Bob Butts.
