A battle over who should be regent and rule the country until the king was old enough developed between two parties - one led by Philippe, the Duc d'Orleans, and the other by the Duc de Maine. Although Philippe became regent, the followers of his rival did not remain idle. Among the possessions in dispute was Douglas Castle. It belonged to the Scotsman, James Douglas, but was held by force by an English garrison under the command of Sir John de Walton.
