Earth's entire population has become infected with an airborne virus, but only one percent have the specific gene required to activate it and they become to be known as the "One Percenters".
These individuals begin to develop unusual abilities due to the rare gene. In most cases these abilities are harmless but, in a few isolated cases, they become extremely dangerous. Because of this threat, all One Percenters are forced into isolated facilities run by a company called Sanaxus to undergo further testing. Under the guise of being a research company searching for a cure, Sanaxus carries out barbaric tests on the One Percenters with their own secret agenda in mind. That is, until a cataclysmic event at a minimum-security camp involving One Percenter Lenard Higgs, a former college professor, triggers the start of a war between government-backed Sanaxus and the One Percenters.

Story and art by Dave Chisholm. Foreword by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Charlie "Bird" Parker and and Dizzy Gillespie brought frenetic sounds of bebop from the East Coast jazz underground to the West Coast for a two-month residency at Billy Berg's Hollywood jazz club in 1945. This marked the beginning of a tumultuous two year-stint for Bird bumming around L.A., showing up at jam sessions, crashing on people's couches, causing havoc in public places, and recording some of his most groundbreaking tracks, "A Night in Tunisia" and "Ornithology."
Chasin' the Bird explores Bird's relationship with the people he met encountered during his L.A. sojourn and those found themselves in the orbit of the jazz genius.

1st printing. Written by Nicky Wright and Joe Kubert. The world has never seen the like of the American comic book. In their heyday, the top 500 comics sold over 60 million copies a month, and are still avidly collected. Taking us from the 1930s into the 1950s, Nicky Wright tells the fascinating story of the rise of this highly creative popular art form through its decline due to the self-censorship imposed by Congress and the churches. Highly illustrated with a huge range of front covers, comic strips, and images of the characters, the book also covers the personalities who wrote, drew, and edited these classics. Both comics studies and adaptation studies have grown separately over the past twenty years. Yet there are few in-depth studies of comic books and adaptations together. Available for the first time in English, this collection pores over the phenomenon of comic books and adaptation, sifting through comics as both sources and results of adaptation. Essays shed light on the many ways adaptation studies inform research on comic books and content adapted from them. Contributors concentrate on fidelity to the source materials, comparative analysis, forms of media, adaptation and myth, adaptation and intertextuality, as well as adaptation and ideology.
