Karate Prom GN (2024 First Second Books) 1-1ST

    (see more images)

1st printing. Story and art by Kyle Starks. Don "TheDragonWilson" Jones is the finest fighter Benjamin Harrison High School has ever produced. Like, "global crime cartel" terrifying. From prom to the after-party to graduation, Don and Sam-and an increasingly eclectic cast of supporting oddballs-will have to fight their way through a gauntlet of opponents, all in the name of love (and punching). Did we mention the punching? Fast-paced, madcap, and completely free of any kind of redeeming or morally thoughtful content, KARATE PROM is a loving homage to teen comedies of the '80s as well as badly dubbed kung-fu films. Softcover, 6-in. x 8-in., 176 pages, full color. Cover price $17.99.

American policy-makers have long been locked in a heated battle over whether, how many, and what kind of immigrants to allow to live and work in the country. Those in favor of welcoming more immigrants often cite humanitarian reasons, while those in favor of more restrictive laws argue the need to protect native citizens. But economist Bryan Caplan adds a new, compelling perspective to the immigration debate: He argues that opening all borders could eliminate absolute poverty worldwide and usher in a booming worldwide economy, greatly benefiting humanity.

Alice Guy First Lady of Film GN (2022 SelfMadeHero) 1-1ST

    (see more images)

    1st printing.

Written by Jose-Luis Bocquet. Art and cover by Catel Muller.

In 1895 the Lumière brothers invented the cinematograph. Less than a year later, 23-year-old Alice Guy, the first female filmmaker in cinema history, made The Cabbage Fairy, a 60-second movie, for Léon Gaumont, and would go on to direct more than 300 films before 1922.

Her life is a shadow history of early cinema, the chronicle of an art form coming into its own. A free and independent woman who rubbed shoulders with masters such as Georges Méliès and the Lumières, she was the first to define the professions of screenwriter and producer. She directed the first feminist satire, then the first sword-and-sandal epic, before crossing the Atlantic in 1907 to the United States and becoming the first woman to found her own production company.

Guy died in 1969, excluded from the annals of film history.

    Softcover, 400 pages, B&W.

    Cover price $23.99.
