Then, a strange vehicle, moving with lightning speed, appeared in the United States. But when a mysterious underwater craft was sighted, John Strock, head inspector of the Federal police, found that all these happenings were caused by a single machine, which could fly above the earth, sail or ride on its surface, and dive into the water's depths. He had, of course, another name, be he was anxious that it should not be known. This was not meant to hide a personality, but a naked and ugly fact. For Jim, as a young man, had made one error. A battle over who should be regent and rule the country until the king was old enough developed between two parties - one led by Philippe, the Duc d'Orleans, and the other by the Duc de Maine. Although Philippe became regent, the followers of his rival did not remain idle.
